virus in the chat room?

when i had this diner with my friends, they told me that they been virus when they chatting in the messenger.and learn that this virus. is on going its been two weeks now. i feel scared. for they dont know the reason why the got it.i ask them mybe they accepted something or downloaded thing from the net it might carry the virus. they said no.im starting to feel worrid since i dont have knowlege about computer much. i dont like the problem. it giving me stress. i wish i could not catch it. have you heard about it?
