Do you consume food beyond its expiration date?

Isn't there health issues when the food has expired and yet you still consume it? I know there are some food items that are safe to consume weeks or months after the printed expiration date..and sometimes, I really dare eat those expired food items if they look and smell good, and no evidence of deterioration. Do you also do that? Or you readily throw away those expired food items?

Yeah, but not necessarily... I check the expiry date of all the packed food items that I buy from the market before consuming them.. If they have already expired I prefer throwing them away.. But I do try eating them before they get expired..

No I don't. When food is beyond its expiration date, I don't consume it anymore. I am too scared to gamble my health.

I have eaten foods that the expiration date has passed. Just this past weekend I had a can of soup that expired in April. The practice of putting dates on canned foods is relatively new. Used to be you just kept canned food until the can bulged or it smelled bad when you opened it. I don't think the canning process has changed. I think we have those dates because it is another way for the government to control food manufacturers. I don't eat lunch meats or fresh meats that have expired or eggs that are pass the date, since these could harbor live bacteria.

Good thing you didn't catch food poisoning =) Usually canned foods are not safe to consume past their expiration dates.

I absolutely will not eat anything past the expiration date! I won't even eat anything past the sale by date, and it's usually okay. I'm just paranoid about that stuff. Like this morning, my husband ate a big bowl of cereal. I went to fix some and I saw that the milk's sale by date was yesterday. I wouldn't eat the cereal and my husband was trying to tell me it was okay, but I just couldn't make myself eat it anyway. I don't know why I'm like that. Ha ha. I figure the food is probably okay, but I just can't do it.

Thanks for that. I'll try to start doing better with the sale by stuff. :)

Usually the sale by date is used as a guide by the store to know how long it can display a product for sale. Milk starts deteriorating in quality quite quickly. Pasteurized milk usually remains for five days after its sell-by date. However, if milk isn't refrigerated promptly, it will develop a sour taste and spoil, eventhough it might not necessarily be dangerous. However, if the product has already bacteria (and we really couldn't tell just by visual inspection), the use-by date becomes irrelevant because they can harm you much before then.

I'm quite health conscious person so if the food has expire, I would throw it away immediately. I would rather waste that food than to fall sick after eating.

yes, its better to be on the safe side. but I believe there are some food items that are still safe for consumption even after the expiration date..example, fresh eggs, pasta, etc.

one day after expiry date is still considered okay with me because i believe there is an allowance factor by the manufacturer especially dry food. it's still go into my tummy if i'm hungry....:)

I believe so, too. And Im wondering why don't just the manufacturer put the maximum expiration date?

i guess it's standard procedure, all products released from factory must contain information complete with 'safe' expiry date meaning to say, there is tolerance one or two days + or -

nah...we have this item that's already expired but the manufacturer extended its expiration coz we asked them if the item is still safe to use..and guess what, the expiration date was extended (+ 1 year!)

The expiration date on the food is the date that the stores have to pull it from the shelves, not the last date that it is safe to eat. Depending on what the food is, some things are safe to eat days after, and some much further beyond the expiration dates. We have one of our local stores that sells outdated foods. They are in a special bin that is clearly marked "outdated" and the products are marked down significantly. As long as you can use them up right away, you can get some great deals there. I have no problem with using them. Just make sure that you check them. Do you really think that a can of soup will hurt you if you eat it on Oct. 10 instead of Oct. 9? I wouldn't be afraid to eat it a few months from now. Likewise, you can smell if your milk is sour. If it smells fine, and tastes fine, I have never gotten sick from it yet and I have drank it a week or so past the expiration date. I only use the expiration dates as a guideline, not as a rule.

There are certain foods that you should be very careful of, for instance, fresh meats don't keep well for too long beyond their expiration dates. Even with meats though, usually a day or two is fine as long as you check them before preparing them. Besides, I am certain that the store would not be allowed to sell these items if there were safety issues involved.

That was something new, Kelly. But I stand firm that expiration date is the last date food is on its best quality, and for some food items, the last date it is safe to eat. Im really amazed that one of your local stores sell outdated food items. Still, just be careful. God bless!

Of course, because it is safe. But most of the time I don't look at the expiration date because I think they must sell something which will be beyond the expiration date.

I'm afraid I might suffer food poisoning if I did not consume the food before its expiry date. It happened not long ago that one of my relatives suffered to this and she just got back from the hospital just recently and the reason for this is eating up expired canned food.

Canned foods really should be consumed on or before the declared expiration date; otherwise, one would suffer from botulism...and its deadly.

More food are actually inedible after they past its expiration period. Some still good. For instance, to save money, we got some canned goods free after one or two days of the expiration date. So, that really depends on.

I do eat it if it looks, smells and tastes right. I don't like to waste, there are lots of starving people in the world, so nonsense waste is a bad thing in my eye.
