As an American, I have to say that most of our experiences with Filipino doctors in our country are NOT positive ones. I don't know why that is, I just know that it happens that way. So I am sure that is where the line from the DH writers came from. And if you want to blame someone, blame the writers, not Teri Hatcher.

You're right. The writers are the ones responsible. However from those words they made her say, this was making a judgement on ALL Filipinos. I don't think that's fair to us. If she happened to say "some med school from the United States" rather than "some med school from the Philippines", you probably would understand how the Filipinos feel about this. There are American doctors who aren't good too. My American fiance had an experience with a doctor who issued a prescription to him that caused him to fall into a coma. That was an American doctor.

that makes desperate housewives... desperate? anyways, yeah, HOUSE is still the best... no matter how arrogant HOUSE can be in the series, still, i think, the writers are quite sensitive with issues of races, genders and etc. ;)

I'm with you on that, no matter how much of a jerk they make him, it's still going to be a great show.

Well, if you've been watching House closely, he's made several racist remarks already. Remember that episode in Season 2 in which he asked his former med school classmate why he only got published in an obscure medical journal in India where "2+2=5"? I think if he had substituted Philippines in that statement, some Filipino groups would have raised hell again. What did that imply? Did the writer of the episode imply that Filipinos are idiots? And the whole hullabaloo repeats itself. Then there's one episode in which Dr. Foreman tried to write on the white board during their brainstorming sessions and then House grabbed the marker from him and told him there's a reason why the board is called white. So, is that another racist remark?
I think we take ourselves too seriously sometimes. It's just another wordplay. People know better than believing what fictional characters say on TV. If we continue on raising hell at every racist remark we hear on TV, soon there'll be no villains nor racist characters portrayed on TV because every network will be afraid to get themselves sued.

hi... welll, we have to give Teri Hatcher a benefit of a doubt, i mean, she was just acting out what that script writer wrote... umm, we don't know what's behind that storyline. however, for me, the script writer should be the one blamed. Also i believe that Filipinos are also talented people, dedicated in their field of professions, not just in the field of medicine... though, of course there are some bad eggs in the basket, which is universally prevalent in all culture and nationalities. so i hope next time, there won't be degrading remarks.... happy mylotting...:-D

Hmm.. I think you're partly right in saying that the script writer should be the one to be blamed in this, but Teri Hatcher, though she is an actress and acting out a part she should have been more sensitive and more thoughtful of the words she utters out of her mouth, she could have complained or told the writers that she wouldn't say degrading words to a country, a person, or what have you. As you I don't know the story line as I have never watched an episode of Desperate Housewives but I do hope that they will be more careful in their scripts and even the actors should be more sensitive to derogatory remarks that they would utter on the show.

Racial discrimination are everywhere. Even doctors from third world countries are victims. They, too deserve accetance & respect since out of the, excellent doctors came out. Some or most just don't see nor realize it. Not all doctors from top countries are excellent either. There are others who gain their knowledge by studying in third world countries.

Obviously, that issue has irk a lot of Filipino's..... not only was it insulting, it has undermined the capabilities of our people in their chosen industry. And by saying from the Philippines it has generalized all of us. Sometimes we have to think of what would be the impact of doing and saying things to other people. And we should take RESPONSIBILITY in our actions too.

oh you said it and the filipino community and the filipino doctors already have rallied against this and the producers of the show already issued a public apology but i think the local doctors aren't that satisfied with it, if I heard correctly I think they want to scene erased or another scene done to correct the notion that Filipino Doctors are inadequate or inferior to others.

I don't watch Desperate Housewives, but in reall ife I have a Filipino doctor. I absolutely love him. He is smart (obviously), funny, and is one of the few who take time to actually listen to what I am saying.

i haven't seen the video clip of this episode. But i heard this on the news. I don't think that it is fair for the Filipinos to be insulted this way. There are a lot of Filipino people who had earned awards in their respective fields. I also agree that Teri Hatcher should not be blamed because she's just doing her job. I think that the writer should be the one who should apologised for what her character said regarding Filipino doctors.

We should not be carried away by our emotions on such matters. We should look at the context of that line in the series. I don't watch the series, but I know, from reading others' sites, that it was called for by the identity of Teri Hatcher's role. I am a Filipino and what makes me ashame is what our politicians are asking for from the producers -- an apology. When it was given, these politicians did not accept them.
