Packaged foods maker Kraft Foods (Charts) issued a recall in the U.S. for its Baker's Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares due to concerns that the product may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria.
The affected packages have UPC Code 0043000252200 and four best-when-used-by dates: 31 MAR 2008 XCZ; 01 APR 2008 XCZ; 02 APR 2008 XCZ; and 03 APR 2008 XCZ, the company said late Wednesday.
Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In people with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.
The product was distributed nationwide. Kraft said consumers shouldn't consume the recalled product and should discard any product they may have.
The potential for contamination was noted after testing by the Food and Drug Administration detected the presence of Salmonella in some packages of the chocolate. The company said it is "aggressively investigating" the source of the problem.
This recall is only for Baker's Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares (6 oz.); no other varieties of Baker's White Chocolate or any other Baker's products sold in the United States are impacted by the recall.
Consumers can contact the company at 1-800-310-3704 with any questions or to request reimbursement for purchased product.

What is up with all these food recalls? it makes me want to live off my own land or something.
I don't use this but I actually had some of the hamburger that was recalled recently and some of the peanut butter than was recalled a while ago. Nothing's safe these days!

Wow, another recall. Do you get the feeling that it isn't safe to buy anything anymore? Thanks for posting this for people to see. Its scary how many recalls have been going out lately. We actually had some of that peanut butter they recalled a few months ago. Luckily my sister new about the recall or else we might have eaten it.

It IS crazy that you can't buy anything anymore without worrying about what's in it. What I'd like to know though is how the heck CHOCOLATE is affected? I mean, I can understand meat and dairy and canned goods... but where the heck would salmonella come into the manufacturing process of chocolate? I don't get it and it makes me afraid to eat anything these days.
