stepchildren

Who all out there have stepchildren? How do you help them adjust to you being in their life without causing conflict? I am engaged to this wonderful man who has a eight year old son who needless to say doesnt listen to me at all and has a major attitude problem with me. What do I need to do to make things easier for him and me. I have been in his life going on three years now and nothing has changed please help.

Patience, consistency, and like (you don't have to LOVE him, but you have to LIKE him). Also you need helpfrom his dad. He's the one who needs to be setting clear rules and guidelines. I've been the "other mom" for a little over 6 years. He was 11 at the time so I had to deal with all the normal stuff on top of adolesence! It was NOT fun. But things have settled down now and we get along pretty well with each other...not that we're without problems but it's just the usual teenage stuff.
