I am worried that my little girl might have the same mental illness that I have or even ADD like her father. Does anyone know if these things are hereditary? Her father and I do well with our own issues but should we be looking for some sign that these thing are effecting her? She is six and smart and hyper and a natural born leader but her teacher has expressed her inability to concentrate. Her work suffers because her mind wonders so much. Do I just let her grow a little and see what happens or intervene now?

Yes, ADD and other mental issues can be hereditary. It is possible that she has inherited something from you or from her father. With the problems she is having at school, it wouldn't hurt to have her tested. Make sure she has a full battery of tests, though. Start with a complete physical. Then she should have psychological testing, as well as neurological testing, such as a CT scan, MRI, and/or PET scan. All of those components are necessary for a true positive diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. You can't truly diagnose a brain disorder without checking the brain, after all. :)

My son was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and his doctor said that it is hereditary. His father and 2 of his step brothers have ADHD. I was also told that bi=polar disorder is also hereditary. The doctor was telling me that there is s fine line between ADHD and bi-polar, and that they were both hereditary.
