The most practical and legitimate way to travel for free is to work in the travel or transportation industries. The top two employment opportunities for traveling are with major airlines or on the high seas as a merchant marine or a crew member of a cruise line. While the spotlight jobs of pilot and flight attendant are difficult to obtain, airlines have many other positions - reservations, baggage handlers, cleaning and maintenance, office staff, etc - and most major airlines extend flight benefits to all employees. Merchant marines are the people who crew the ocean freighters and tankers that transport commercial products around the world. Again the glamour positions of the ship's officers are harder to get, but there are many entry-level positions available. Modern cruiselines tend to sail in a certain area - such as the Mediterranean or the Caribbean - but many serve two areas by season and need to move their ships from say the Caribbean in the winter to Alaska or Scandinavia for the summer. Though there are a few of the cruiseline operators that still sail around the world. Not everyone can be Gopher or Capt Stubbing on the Love Boat, but like a grand hotel they need a variety of employees to keep the ship sailing and take care of the passengers. Two other options that could get you at least around Europe would be working for either the railroads or intercontinental trucking firms.

The best tip is either take a course of a pilot, a flight steward/stewardess, or be a seafarer. My father is a seafarer, he get to see the world for free to travel and go places. I'm also planning to be one, that's why I applied and is now waiting for a call from the company I applied to!;)
