Does anyone sell on Etsy? I would like to know your experience on this site? How are the sales? Is ls there too much competition for jewelry? How is the administration? Any information would help. I like the whole idea of Etsy and would prefer to sell on that site vs Ebay but I know I can reach more people on Ebay.

I sell on Etsy. I enjoy the site and yes, there is a lot of jewelry copmetition, but all of my sales have been jewelry so far. The admin is pretty good and they provide forums for a seller to promote their items.
For me personally, I never thought I could make money selling on EBAY. To often, the prices realized for the types of items I sell were way below my costs or just at cost. Once I figured in my time, Ebay fees etc, I determined I would be often losing money on my items. With Etsy, your item is on sale, not up for auction, so you can ask YOUR sell price and unlike Ebay, where you either pay for a monthly store at $15.00 p/month of list your item in 7 day auctions for .20-.40, ETSY is a .20 listing and it stays active in your store for 3 or 4 months! Etsy also gives you 5 free pictures, where Ebay gives you 1 and then starts charging.
Etsy is getting more publicity all the time and I've found that the people buying there are craftier-types who understand value and are willing to pay for it. Where on Ebay, people try to get items on the cheap. Yea, more people on Ebay, but I get more bang for my buck (okay .20) than I could ever get on Etsy.
Here's an example of why I won't sell finished product on Ebay... 2 or 3 weeks ago I sold an item I had listed about 6 weeks earlier. It cost me .20 to list and whatever the small Etsy fee was at the time of the sale. It was an active item the entire time. On Ebay, it would've needed to be re-listed 7 more times to stay active the whole time and I would've lost money on the eventual sale (& I'm saying if Ebayers would've bid it up to my asking price-another big IF!) Instead I sell at a decent little profit, get paid immediately and both buyer and seller are happy.
I would sell supplies on Ebay, but I doubt you'll ever see any of my creations there.
Good luck in whatever you decide.... Etsy is free to try...give it a shot, I think you'll like it.

Thank you SO much for the information. I thought Etsy was a good of a find when I saw their rates. I am amazed you can keep your craft listed for 4 months, and 5 pics, wow! I totally see how the charges from ebay can add up especially if you have to re-list. I like the fact that Etsy has a forum, I think it would be nice to get information and feedback and perhaps new friends and customers as well. I am going to give it a try. Your information was very valuable to me, thank you for being so generous with the info. Best of luck to you!

How does Etsy pay you?
I like HandmadeCatalog.com, but they charge me a monthly subscription fee, and take out 15% of my sales. They pay either by check or Paypal. I sell hand knit scarves.

I like etsy, but I find it can take a while to sell a product on there. Some sellers have already sold a lot, and so it is easier for them. But if you have a good product, and are willing to be patient about building up your etsy store and reputation, I think it's a great platform. It's such a fun site, and everything is very easy to use.

I think promoting is the key to finding that potential buyer. I try to promote for about 10-15 minutes 3-4 times each day.
I started a thread under ETSY on myLot, hoping to attract some of the experienced sellers to share their secrets or tips on being successful. If anyone has any they care to share with all of us newbies, please post em.

It depends alot on what you"re selling.I think there is a lot of jewellery. And with the recent changes in Australian Ebay sales seem to be getting worse, well that"s what I've found anyway.

Thanks for the response. I have been on Etsy for awhile now and have not been that successful but I haven't given it 100% either. I really need to post more items. I am selling jewelry and I know it is competitive but am going to keep trying. If you want to check it out my shop - milehighdesigns.etsy.com
I will have to check out Australian Ebay, never heard of it.
