The tastes of childhood.

OK - I've ranted and vented a little today, so I thought I would calm down a bit for a "happier" discussion! As I write this, I am eating a packet of Tyrrells potato crisps. I realise the actual make and type of food will mean nothing to non-Brits, but as I eat them, they are taking me straight back to my childhood, and reminding me of the type of crisps I used to eat about 40 years ago! I guess that is their intention - taking people back to their childhood on a nostalgia trip!
So it got me thinking - what foods and tastes remind you of your childhood days? Is there anything you ate as a child that you can't buy anymore, and would dearly love to taste again? Or something that when you taste it now, it takes you back to carefree childhood?
Mine would be the kind of potato crisps I'm eating now, R. White's lemonade with a packet of Ritz cheese crackers (eaten in the pub garden on a Summers' evening!), and my Mum's home-made dumplings. So what are yours?

Oh yes! I remember waxed bottle sippy drinks and coke out of the old time kind of glass bottles which we needed a bottle cap opener. Then there was this type of gum that I loved which isn't around anymore is called Chewels. It was a really good type of gum which came in all different flavors and I always got the bubble gum kind. It had a filling of flavor in the middle and was of yummy taste. Sadly it can't be found anymore and I've checked online for it and it's been discontinued. I don't get it, why is something changed or discontinued when it sells? It's kind a like a rock beating in the head type of thing. Go figure.

Yes - I've never understood that either! Whenever I like something - be it food or make-up, - it is always discontinued! LOL! Thanks for responding here.

I miss Mr. Salty pretzels. My granny and I use to eat them all the time. We use to sometimes dip them in vanilla ice cream. That was really good too. I have never tasted another brand of pretzels that I have ever liked as well. Another thing that I miss, is the many different flavors of Barqs soda and there was also Crass and Shasta, that had good flavors of soda. I haven't seen any of those things in years.

Mr. Salty pretzels sound dreadully bad for you - but very nice too - especially with the ice-cream! LOL! Thanks for responding.

I always remember at the sweet shop the big bottles of loose sweets which could ask for in quarters! (I loved the old measurements) rather than stupid ounces, oh well! I remember rhubarb and custard sweets and pear drops, you can still get them now fortunately and they always remind me of when I went down to the sweet shop as a child with my cousins to spend 50p (you got a lot of sweets back then for 50p!)

Hmm, the only food that would bring back any memories of my childhood would be Spam.
My mom loved it and she would fry it up in the pan and make sandwiches out of them.
I don't like Spam now but I did when I was a kid.
