Why Is It That When I Try To Style My Own Hair ...

Hair Styling - This was taken at the Smithsonian National Zoo today - just look at that horrible bang LOL

... It never turns out the same way when a hairdresser does it. I tried to do a side bang (see pic) and even though I thought I did an "ok" job, just by looking at the picture, the bang is not a proper bang!! Ugh. I can never style my own hair. Do you have the same trouble or are you an expert at styling your own hair? For once I would like to change the style to make it look different, you know?

Oh boy, worse than my ability to style my hair as if I came from the hairdresser maybe only my lack of a green thumb heheheh I was never very good with my hair. THe good thing for me is that my hair is curly enough to cover up my mistakes in hairdressing LOL I can try, but to be honest I think I lack the patience necessary for a good job, so in the end it never comes out the same way. My sister, on the other hand, is a genius. She cam make miracles with her hair, my hair .. any hair :) Come to think of it, she;s also very good with plants, I guess she was the one in the family that got the genes for good hairdresser and good gardener LOL

hehehe know what you mean, straight hair always seems easier to work with, not the curly fuzzy hairball I have too :) ANd no, the one with the good hairdressing skills, plus good gardening skills is my sister. Me.... I think little plants have wanted posters in their news bulletins just because I kill so many of their friends heheheheh

haha lucky her! I have a friend who can style her hair any which way and it always turns out as if a hairdresser did it, not fair LOL maybe because her hair is nice and straight and mine is frizzy wanna-be straight LOL at least you've got gardening skills, I can't even do that! thanks for responding arkaf61!

I think its hard to get that salon look. I let my friend cut my hair and do my own touch ups from time to time. I have found that getting your hair cut when its dry makes a big difference. Maybe you should try that. It might make it easier to style.

Oh, I can't, either. My hair never looks as good as when the hairdresser does it, so I have given up. I just go for neat. It usually looks okay, just not as good.

I was like that when I was still a teener, I'm conscious of my appearance and hair styles is the most important for me. The fact that I'm a guy is also, I feel like more of a girl back then!LoL But now that I've really matured enough, I don't treat my hair as a big deal anymore. As long as I am properly groomed, my hair's combed and my appearance is well-presentable, then that for me is ready I am good to go. When I'm at home, I seldom comb my hair!LoL

When I am at home I don't comb my hair either and just put it up in a ponytail. Because we ventured out today to the Smithsonian National Zoo I thought I would try a new style LOL and it didn't turn out the way I planned it to be and ended up back to my normal hairstyle or ponytail half way through the visit :)

It is much easier to style other people hair. I am very bad with styling my own hair. I think the perception on how other view you and how you view yourself in the mirror is quite different. Above is my personal views though.

I think it is too difficult to style your own hair. Even professionals have other stylists do their hair. I have been in the salon when they are making appointments with each other. Face it, no one can see the back of their head or use one hand on both sides. I always got frustrated that my hair was never the same but realized it was an impossibility when I can't see the back of my head or reach the left side of my head with my right hand. Plus we don't have all the sprays and gels they use. Just do what you can. ;)

I think that your hair looks totally cute. Are you a perfectionist? Do you feel like you need to go to beauty school to get your hair just right? Do you feel that you spend more time in the mirror trying to get it right, than anywhere else in your home? Well you are in luck, there is a new pill on the market called "The Perfect Me." For the low low cost of only $29.95, I will send you a months supply and you will feel the difference immediately. You will feel beautiful and satisfied with your appearance no matter what you have been through. Just send a check or money order to me for $29.95 + $4.95 shipping and handling and your order will be rushed to you immediately. LOL, just kidding, that picture is cute.

I know how you feel sweety - I guess they are trained to know what they are doing plus they have the advantage of being able to look straight at you! I think you look great but I can understand exactly what you mean by saying it just isn't the same! xxx

I used to be a hairdresser, and I swear, I could never do my hair as well as I did other women's hair! There is something about the way hair looks coming out of a salon that is difficult to capture at home. In high school, I could do all kinds of funky things to my hair, but when I got out, I lost some of my funk. Maybe I just don't have the patience anymore to put all those bobby pins in my hair to make a spiky ponytail or cute little buns. I dunno. It just always bothered me that I was a hairdresser and my hair wasn't as awesome anymore!

I think it's the angles. You see they can see and fix your hair from all angles whereas you can not. This always frustrates me as well. I just hate that I can't do anything good with my hair when the hairdresser made it all pretty. I don't go to them often though and i rarely let them style my hair, simply because I'll never be able to do it!

I don't go to them often either. I was trying to copy the bang from a magazine picture LOL and even though I thought it was ok, after several hours and then having that picture taken, ugh it turned out not what i thought it would look like. Oh well, just as well my son closed his eyes :P

Think about it....the stylist has 2 hands to use and is able to move around freely. Unfortunately, we do not have the available mobility to reach around to the back of our heads. I cannot use a straight iron for the life of me. I have come to the conclusion that it is difficult to style your own hair. This is why movie stars hire stylists...because it comes out better when a pro does it.

Speaking as a professional of 20 years, your cut has a lot to do with it. We can make just about any cut look good but if you want to be able to work with it at home you need a good cut. I may get slammed for stereotyping here but I have worked all over the US in many different types of salons. If you want a really great haircut go to either a black woman or a gay man. Just make sure they have been doing hair for atleast 5 or 6 years. Don't go for the cheapest haircut but don't pay an arm and a leg for one either. Tell them what you want to be able to do with your hair and ask them to show you how to do it at home. And take lots of pictures of styles you like, pictures speak louder than words and they will tell you what will or won't work for you. Hope that helps and by the way I think you look great.

With bangs, you comb a layer of your hair down over your face and cut it just above your eyebrows. For real bangs, it is about half way between your eyebrows and your hairline and you take about two layers. For a fringe, you only use one layer and it is cut just above your eyebrows. The reason is that when you do your own hair, you are looking at the mirror image of yourself, and not having eyes in the back of your head (even though you are a parent) you cannot see what the hair stylist sees. She sees your back, and so can flip it or flop it, and arrange it because she does not have to bend her arms backwards to do so. She also has hairspray, lotions, etc. that are not available to the regular customer and which you cannot buy at the store but only in hair salons. So unless you have a room with another mirror and more lighting, I am afraid you cannot copy unless it is a simple cut and flip. But don't worry, the most I can do is to style the ends and flip them up. I am also bad at cutting fringes since my hair grows so fast unless it is at the back.

I had a new haircut about 2 months ago or so and it was lovely...The lady spent like an hour on it....Do you think I could get it to look anywhere close to what she had it looking?.....NO...How hard could it be...A hairdryer here, a squeeze there, a little gel maybe....Not going to happen...I did the best I could and left it at that.....LOL..I think you are absolutely beautiful...good bangs or no bangs....

Hello! Hey not bad...your hair doesn't look bad at all, it actually look good on you. Ohh...I hate doing my own hair, I go to a hairdresser if I really need to style my hair but if not I don't bother at all. I have a long straight hair and I just wear it simply. I don't even do ponytail, I just let my hair hang. Doing my own hair? been there done that, that's what I feel actually. From time to time I do style my own hair but as much as possible I would want to avoid it as it only frustrates me if I didn't get the result I wanted. I would end up tired and in a bad mood...feeling ugly LOL!!Take care. *smile* ciao! c",)
