It never fails, I always seem to catch a cold or two over the course of the year. I'll usually try to get plenty of rest and eat a lot of chicken noodle soup, but even that doesn't really "cure" me quickly enough. When you have a cold, what do you do to try to get rid of it more quickly?

My mum had a doozy that I still use to this day. A shot of scotch, a teaspoon of sugar and then mix it together in a cup with boiling water and drink it as hot as you can. You'll sweat as though you're spending the night at a Motel 6 in Hades but will feel great the next day....works for me every time.

Sounds simple and effective-I'll try that next time-if there is a next time!

My daughter gets a cold every year a couple of weeks after school starts. I warn her to boost her immune system but she ignores me and gets sick. Because I have fibromyalgia I have symptoms that resemble a cold whenever I am overtired. I take a lot of echinacea and echinacea tea, drink lots of water, and when it really feels like a cold I take Cold FX. I had a cold a couple of weeks ago (that my daughter brought home). She had it for two weeks, I had it for four days. It got over it really quickly and it didn't interrupt my life too much.

I will have to check out Cold FX. I can't take a lot of cold medicines because so many use artificial sweeteners, which give me migraines. Echinacea, though, is a good option for me. Which reminds me. I should probably brew a cup of the nasty tasting but very helpful tea that I have in the pantry.

I just looked at my bottle of Cold FX. After all the technical and chemical words, it comes down to being made of ginseng. I don't think Echinacea tea is that strong. I've tasted worse. Hope you feel better soon.

In our house its bundling up to sweat it out, using the diffuser (peppermint and eucalyptus) to get rid of headaches, sniffles and to induce sleep, plenty of clear liquids, homeade chicken soup and much rest

Well, if sweating it out will really work, I think I may be well on my way to getting rid of this cold. I woke up about half an hour before my alarm today, sweating like crazy!

Well, as a preventative, I use raw, unfiltered honey in tea and in food several times a week. The pollen in it helps build a resistance to the local pollens in the air to prevent any allergy induced colds. When I feel a cold coming on, or if anyone around me has a cold I take Airborne. A lot of times, if I feel that feeling in my sinuses that means a cold is coming and I take a days worth of Airborne doses, I don't get the cold. Even if I get the cold, it's much milder than it normally would be, and I continue to take the Airbourne for the duration of the cold and for a day or two after it's gone. It's expensive, but it's worth it. Also when I have a cold there are lots of bowls of soup and cups of tea. I also tend to make some nice spicy stuff or order spicy soup from Chinese restaurants when I'm sick. It helps clean out the sinuses. Orange juice, too. Then, depending on my symptoms there's cough, cold and/or sinus medicine.

Sadly, we haven't found any good Chinese restaurants around here yet. Before we moved, I loved getting hot and sour soup from the Chinese restaurant about a block away, and it was particularly good when I had a cold!

H2O. A 1/2 gallon of water seems to do the trick for me. I haven't had a cold in years and I attribute it to the amount of water I drink everyday. I also wash my hands after I've been out in the community. If there's a fever involved, good old aspirin works wonders!

Wow, that's pretty interesting! I do drink quite a bit of water, but probably not a 1/2 gallon a day!

Just drink plenty of water, kalamansi juice or orange juice fits well in substitute to Ascorbic acid (vit.C) If you suffer clogged nose due to colds, it is much safer to use salinase drops or spray than to take medicines such as it contains like, PPA - Phenylpropanolamine and chloramphenamine which leads you to drowsiness.

No one has mentioned garlic yet! Even if you don't like the taste it doesn't matter because you just chop a clove of garlic into bite sized pieces and swallow them with water-no chewing involved. Something about the way your stomach has to unravel the garlic means it's more potent or something or rather. Anyway-I've been doing this for over a year now and I can guarantee that it works. I used to get about 3-4 colds a year and since I've been eating the garlic at the first sign of a cold, I haven't been sick in about a year. Every now and then I'll chop up a clove just to keep my immune system up. I swear by it. That combined with oranges or orange juice and bob's your uncle.

You need to eat fruits that are rich in vitamin C. Vitamin C is effective in terms of preventing from having colds and flu as well. Drink a lot of water for at least eight glasses per day. Exercise regularly for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Have a nice day and God speed!

In my hometown, which is an old hill country, when someone catch a cold, they take the radish soup though it is so nasty that most of the younger can not stand it and turn to synthesis medications.I am sure that this remedy is the most cheap and inartificial, and formost it is very effective

When I have colds, I increase taking my vitamin C from the daily 1 tablet (500g) to 2 tablets a day. I drink lots of fluids: water and fresh pineapple juice. I even take a medicine tablet so as my colds will be for 2 days only. I would like to prevent colds by taking my vitaminc C daily, drinking pineapple juice and water, avoiding cold food (ice cream, cold water, iced tea, etc)

What has worked for me is when I get the first signs of a scratchy throat, I gargle with a strong mouth wash 4 - 6 times a day. After each gargle, I swallow just a sip or two. When I do this right away ( instead of waiting to get home from work ), the cold does not set in me. When I do wait til I get home, I do the same routine but triple my intake of garlic tablets and take 1500mg of vitamin C for 2 days. The cold tries to get in (I get the sniffles) but the ammo I use keeps it at bay. By 2 days time, no more cold. Seventy percent of what makes you ill resides in your intestines. By swallowing the mouth wash and downing gobs of garlic, I am dis-infecting my intestines. You can buy both at the local 99 cent store. This is the cheapest remedy that has ever worked for me.

I take lots of vitamin c and drink a lot of hot tea with honey. It helps. There's really nothing you can do to "cure" a cold, though. I just try to get a lot of rest and wait it out other than that.

Hi there. My family have always mixed up, fresh lemon juice, honey, hot boiled water and grated or chopped garlic cloves... This we drink when cool enough, by morning the cold has broken and we feel so much better... This drink cures us as quick, and we would never trade it in for anything else lol...

This is a great question. I am very much into using home remedies and alternative medicines before using antibiotics. Canned chicken soup is full of salt, which isn't good for you. When I get a cold or I start to feel sick, I begin juicing my own fruits and vegetables. I have a juicer and it's easy and simple to use one. The juice is fresh, full of nutrients and vitamins. Plus, the juice is easy to digest and it gives your body a rest. By doing that I increase my fluid intake too. I love juicing, I juice daily, even when I am not sick. Honestly, I haven't been sick for a long time. Check out http://www.detoxbodyplan.com and you can find some great information on detoxing the body and on purchasing a juicer. I love it and I am so glad that I give my body what it deserves.
