Saw this scary show on History channel, what do you think?

Ok, so I love watching the History Channel. So many interesting things to see. But this particular show was about the 2012 Mayan Doomsday prediction. In this show they mention the date from the Mayan Calendar predicting the end of our world as we know it today. Then they moved on to the same date being predicted in Chinese texts and some of the ancient Greek prophet texts. All pointed to something major happening on the Winter Solstice in 2012. Apparently according to this show, the Earth will be in alignment with the other planets to the middle of the Solar System which only happens once every 21,800 years (or something along those lines) and that unknown results are expected. One theory was that we could experience a pole shift that could potentially move our equator from its current position causing world wide catastrophe. So I am watching this show and although I am a live in the moment kind of person generally, I have to admit that this show kind of made me nervous. Even if everyone doesn't subscribe to the pole shift theory, alot of prophets have mentioned something happening around that time.
Do you ever watch stuff like this? Is anyone else nervous out there of something happening or do you chalk it up to the other people out there that have talked about the end of the world and then nothing happens? I know we shouldn't dwell on stuff like this, but it made me want to go out and start stockpiling food.

I love the history channel! The Mayans certainly had a sophisticated calendrical system and I am constantly in awe of the intricate artwork they created. I was watching (on the national geographic channel) a program on global warming and the polar ice caps. I can't stop thinking about it. The gist of the show was about how the ice sheets are melting (in Greenland) due to the temperature changes in the atmosphere. The results were catastrophic. I wonder if the two things are linked? It seems possible that by 2012 the ice caps could have melted enough to swamp the earth. Maybe I should learn how to fish...

Yeah! That is a good thought. I think we'll all be eating more fish! I am glad I know how to swim. LOL. I really wish I had the National Geographic channel. I have heard they have some really great programs and I can't get it on my set up. Not in my area or something. They mentioned the ice caps briefly on this program as well. Might be linked...who knows.

Regardless of whether it's true or not, you still have to live your life, everyday between now and then. So dwelling on it probably isn't going to help you have a better life. Just keep your eyes open. Be a good person. I heard a scientist say recently that about every 22,000 years this planet goes through an Ice Age, which corresponds to what you mentioned above. If that's the case, the "end of the world as we know it" may be just that, an Ice Age.

That's kind of what they alluded to that it was an 'as we know it' kind of thing. But there isn't anything anyone can do about it at this point if it is going to happen, so your right, dwelling isn't going to do anyone any good. These shows are mostly for affect. It is kind of interesting to see how many people subscribe to the theories though.

These are exciting shows smartly done to keep you wanting for more and upping the channel's viewership. I think we are still far away from rightly predicting anything like that. The human mind is always wanting for something new and exciting and which at the same time could be sad. See, if the world has to end it will end before either of us even realizing that. Then why end your life thinking about all this before??

Too true. The last few years I have been just facinated with any of the natural disaster shows. The one about the megavolcano under Yellowstone was really good. And of course, it could go at any minute...:) These shows are fun to watch, and no, I don't think I would want to spend the rest of my life thinking that tomorrow could be the last day. But really, that could be any day. I think the biggest thing I walk away with on these shows is that I need to be more prepared for the everyday emergencies that I can kind of have a little control over.

I didn't see the show but I've heard and read about these predictions. It is something to think about and I guess if someone's looking for more toworry about this could do it but there have been so many similar predictions throughout history I wouldn't get too nervous just yet, anyway. I just hope my daughter and grandkids don't see this because they do get all worked up over this sort of thing!

I saw that. I love watching The history, discovery, animal planet. I even got my husband into some of the shows.
I don't think it will make any difference if the world ends or not. If it does then that's it and there's nothing we can do to stop it. If not then here we are to stay. I'm more concerned about the things we can do something about.

Those are my favorites too. Plus the food channel. I am constantly flipping between those. There are some really neat shows on those channels. Definitely more healthy to worry about the stuff we can do something about. Although I am a control freak, so that means I worry about a lot of stuff. LOL

I don't live my life based on what could happen someday. If I did I wouldn't get up in the morning. For me, I try to live in today because I can't fix the past or spend today locked in to what will happen tomorrow. Focusing on a possible scenario only causes undo stress. Besides, what control do you have over it if it does happen? None. None of us have any guarantees of even living for the next minute, let alone paralyze us with fear over what can happen tomorrow. There was supposed to have been according to scientists an alignment of the planets in the year 2000 that would cause all kinds of disasters. I'm still here, and so are you. I for one can't live my live in fear.

Very true! There really are no guarantees. I hadn't heard of the thing in 2000 though. Thanks for that tidbit. For anyone that dwells on stuff like this, that would make them feel better I am sure. I know there have been tons of people predicting this stuff since the beginning of time. Nothing has happened so far as you said.

i dont believe in this kind of stuff. i mean, there have been many predictions in the past about the end of the world and their predicted year/s has already passed and nothing has happened. i dunno. maybe they are just making a big deal of all the things they see around them, they see something extra ordinary and they already call it a sign. there's really no proof to this.
and besides, i think its better if we live our life not knowing when the world is gonna end. afterall, its better to enjoy the present than to get worried about the future. ^__^

Totally. I have mixed feelings though. Part of me would rather know so that I could do a little to be as prepared as possible, but the other half is like you said, I just don't want to know when its my time. Ultimately you have to live life like everyday is the last day and enjoy it to the fullest.

Haha don't you think it's too early to stockpile for a 2012 catastrophe? Your food would be expired by then. LOL
Hmm... seriously now. That show seems interesting. I wish I could watch it. I would have to watch it before I can make a decision whether it is convincing or not. But if it is true that the Mayan Calendar, Chinese texts as well as Greek prophets all point to the same date of the end of the world, maybe there is something to it.
In the meantime, life goes on. I don't really want to live my life in fear of something like that. I'd rather think positive. If you're good and do good, you're good to go anytime!

Ok, I didn't see the show either but I have heard this stuff before. Here's something to think about, If you do believe that the world is going to end as we know it what are you going to do? Are you going to live the next 5 years preparing for the end or are you going to live better, love more and laugh harder? That would be my choice.
