After completing an astonishing 14-0 sweep of the eliminations round, the UE red warriors came crashing down with back-to-back defeats against the De La Salle green archers in the finals.
Was it the long vacation they got? Was it the fact that this was their first championship experience as against a very seasoned DLSU team?
Personally, I think it was the loss on Game 1 that really spelled the difference. During that game, UE was fighting very hard even though they committed a lot of mistakes and their heart was really set to win. But after a near miracle, DLSU escaped with the win. To me that loss shattered the red warriors. It dissolved their aura of invcibility. They were on their way to winning their 15th straight game and then a loss came. It tore them apart, they seemed to lose confidence. It was evident in their performance the next game. The usually reliable Marcy Arellano was but a shadow of his former self. Coach Dindo was forced to let Paul Lee play in his stead and fortunately the rookie shone. The rest of them team looked tentative in the second game, nervous. It was as if they were lost and wandering around desperately looking for directions.
Will this heartbreak of a loss mold them better next year as what most people (including DLSU coach Franz) have been saying? Or will this break the team apart? Some players might take to blaming themselves for the debacle. "We had the chance and I let my team down." Will that be the sentiment going into next season? Coach Dindo went out of the locker room only after more than 2 hours inside.
Only time will tell if the UE red warriors, destined for great things, will finally live up to their billing. For now, its time for DLSU to rejoice over the fairy tale ending of a roller coaster season for them. Congratulations DLSU green archers
