I also have very thick hair - and recently had it cut from my hips to just about my elbow - it is remarkable the difference. less strain headaches as well as being much easier to comb through - it also is healthier, getting the split ends off (which is why I had so much taken off)
I would not get it thinned though, that damages the hair - you are cutting away certain areas while leaving other areas uncut - when it starts to grow it will be an uneven mess - even bulkier than when you started. strange as it sounds thinning hair is best done by people with already thin hair as it helps to bulk it up and give it a fuller appearance.

Hair causing headaches is entirely possible. I never get headaches; however, I really like my hair to be in a tight, non-frizzy ponytail/messy bun type style when I put it up. So because I put my hair up so tight, I always get headaches on days I wear my hair like this. It sounds weird, but it's true. You'll feel a weight lifted off you (literally) when you get your hair trimmed. If you get it thinned out a little bit, that's even more weight off your hair. I'm sure your hair is beautiful. The pride of every woman is her hair. I just got about seven inches off my hair a few months ago. I absolutely love it and my hair still is below my shoulders. I've never grown my hair out longer than my lower back, but I know what long hair can feel like. If you're having to put as much time and effort into your hair as you do and you're ready for a change, try it and see if that doesn't make your headaches disappear. I hope it helps! Great discussion, Jenn.

I often get headaches from letting my hair grow long. It's so heavy that it pulls on my head all the time. My problem is finding someone to cut it that I'm comfortable with and does a good job. It's about mid back length right now and I'd love to get it cut.

My hair was half way down my back, and it was really thick. I made the mistake of getting it cut last week up to my shoulders. My hairdresser said she wouldnt layer it to thin it out because it would get really bushy. What a mistake!!!! As soon as I washed it and blow dried it, it was gone so bushy again. I will have to go back in a couple weeks time and see if she can thin it out for me.
