When you order take out, do you leave a tip?

If you leave a tip, how much do you leave?
I'm never sure what to do when I go pick up something I ordered for take-out.
In some restaurants I've seen people leave tips.
In some places it seems as if tipping is not something you do for takeout.
I pretty much always thought of tipping as something you do for waiters or waitresses. It didn't occur to me that you're supposed to tip until I went to some places here in Miami.
They are small diner type restaurants that serve cuban food. They usually have a window where people go to order coffee or a quick snack. Usually people will leave a tip of their change.
I'm a little confused about the tipping etiquette on take-out food.

Well when it comes to tipping at restraunts I will as long as the food and service was decent. Without sounding like a idiot these people already get paid a salary for working there and those hours so I really don`t see why we do tip them. I was a roofer for many years and that was hard work but we did`nt get tips. My overall point is I think there`s jobs were people are working in way more hazardous and deadly positions that deserve tips that don`t get them so why should someone who works in a nice environment get one. Although this is what I believe I don`t practice it. Again if the food is good and is served fast and decent sure Ill tip five dollars or something but as for take out food I don`t ever tip these people because most of the time they get cash every night from there employer and most get their gas payed so why give these people a tip for driving your food to your house it just makes no sense to me. Anyways great post but this is merely just my opinion.

Am sorry to say this, am damn mean, I wont tip anybody for a service I have fully paid for, why should I do that? It ammounts to being wasteful because am ver particular with my accountability, how would I account for a tip?

I top if I eat in or if I get delivery. I don't tip if I pick up. If I eat in, I get more service than putting food in a container and bagging it up. If I get delivery, they've had to find my place and bring it to my door, so they get a tip. If I get take out, I don't tip.

I only tip if we eat in or have something delivered. The rate I tip is 10% for delivery, 20% for dine-in and 10% for poor service. I never tip for pick-up orders
If tipping is the normal etiquette in your area then I would recommend going along and tipping at whatever the going rate is.

I didn't think this was required. Should I tip the person who gives me my Taco Bell order? I will gladly tip for waitress/waiter service. I have not heard of tipping for take-out service. Delivery to your front door, yes, but take-out, I don't think so. I might be wrong on this one.

People seem to expect a tip for everything nowadays. My opinion is that I tip for service. If you give me great service, I'll consider tipping. Handing me a box of food and my change isn't worthy of a tip. Being a good waiter is. I just don't understand why people think that everyone needs a tip...

A tip is optional but not required. They are not serving you, you are taking it out and not eating it. You don't tip at McDaonlds when you order "to go", nor do you leave money when you take out at Starbucks, but as you know it is your option. If you think the restaurant/worker did a good job with your order you may consider leaving a tip. However it is not required on these types of orders.

We sometimes order food to pick up from Chilis or Texas Roadhouse. I don't leave anything, or even sign the credit card receipt, until I check the order. If it's right, I add a couple bucks on the receipt. If it's wrong and has to be corrected, they get nothing.
I don't know about take-out etiquette. I just like to recognize that (sometimes) they actually do a good job. If I'm just going up to a window, I don't tip. For coffee and a snack...? Nope.

According to tipping etiquette you don't have to tip at take out or places like coffee shops.

I don't leave a tip if I go to pick the food up. I only leave a tip if go to a restaurant and have someone serving my table.

NO I dont. I know what you mean like we eat out and take out sometimes like at Denny's or something half the time we take out is because we dont have money to tip. Rarely do we tip unless we sit down. Then well we do.

take out, no tips required. if you are dining in, then you may want to tip cause they are SERVING you with your whim and fancies. ake out, they just stick their head out of the windows and pass you the food.
