Should inmates be allowed to procreate?

Weird question, I know. I have been watching season 6 of 'OZ' and one of the characters is fighting for the right to artificially inseminate his wife. He feels that by teh time he is released, his wife will be too old to get pregnant, so he wants the opportunity to be a father now. He's fighting saying that he should have the right to father a child, and that just because he committed a crime, his right to be a father shouldn't be denied. What do you think of this?? My thoughts are that he CAN'T be a father when he's locked up. He can only bring another child into the world that has to be supported by Wellfare and a single mother. I don't think it's unfair to deny this. It's more unfair to the child who will only know his/her father in a visitation room for most of their childhood. Yes, so many incarcerated men already have children, but why add to the problem by allowing someone who is already behind bars to bring one more child into the world among so many fatherless others. Tell me your opinion.

I agree. I think that if you commited a crime, you lost your rights to many things, including access to your spouse and ALL that entails, including fathering a child! Don't do the crime if you can't do the time!

Agreed! They took away the conjugal visits, so this priveledge is gone also.

it seems to me that this guy should have taken the time to become a father before he committed a crime that would get him sent to prison. if he had conjugal visits he would be able to procreate so this really doesn't seem to be a matter of violating his rights, just the legal consequences of his actions. ((for a minute i forgot this was about a tv show LOL))

Yeah, the judge said that since they were legally allowed to ban the conjigal visits, then banning artificial insimination goes right along with it.

Actually, if they didn't have the right to procreate, I wouldn't have my son and three grandchildren. My now-ex was in prison when I got pregnant by him on a weekend home visit. However, if you're talking about conjugal visits on prison grounds, then no - that isn't necessary and isn't a right (although I don't think I'd have a major issue with it if the inmate was terminally ill and the spouse just wanted to "be there" - love is love, regardless of circumstances. But that wouldn't be for procreational reasons - that would be comfort). But, if someone really wants to go so far as to have their child, they can do artificial insemination to achieve it.
