Forgetting things?

Are you forgetting appointments, the name of people, films, or where you left your keys? Although not that important, it still makes us feel anxious. In these cases the loss of memory is not due to age, but to the fact that we are not using our brain properly. Our brain is like a muscle and it needs to be used so as to perform properly.
It is true that exercise helps and that there are also vitamins and medicine to fight this problem, but we can also let our own brain do a bit of work on its own. We need to:
stretch it,
surprise it with unexpected novelties,
take it out of its routine,
distract it through the use of all our senses,
If one does that the result will be a more agile and flexible brain, able to increase its memory capacity.
You probably think that because you read, go to work and do exercise ocasionally, that your mind is stimulated, but unfortunately our life is full of routines. We go to work at the same time everyday, always using the same way. In the evening we watch the same type of television programs and at the same time everyday. All these routine activities make our brain work as if it was on automatic!
To expand our brains we need to do things differently.
For a change try to:
Use the hand that is not dominant,
Read out aloud instead of just to yourself
Take a different way to go and return from work,
Do different things, like going out for a walk in the countryside, smelling things as you go and looking around,
Learn something new, like cooking, embroidery, yoga, or a foreign language.
Tomorrow, remember to do things just a little bit different, for a change!

I guess losing my memory could be one of the things I fear the most, that's why I always try to learn of new things. I'm also thankful of mylot, as it did provide me a more meaningful way to excercise my brain and continue the flow of my cerebral juices!;)LoL
Honestly, I am always curious of something. I am always eager to learn other stuffs I'm not aware of, the feeling is always fulfilling everytime I get to learn new things.
As for my memory, I still have a sharp and long-term memory!;)

Reading your comment reminded me of something I bookmarked a long while ago. It is a web page belonging to Cognitivelabs.com and they reckon they help you to refresh your brain! They have many activities, including some fun exercises, games, tests and brain gyms! It is a very interesting web page, fun, but serious too, as they are backed by some famous universities! Do give it a go, you won't be sorry!

Most of the time I'm good at remembering things. Occasionally I have to write it down but for the most part I can remember things. Like when I go grocery shopping unless I am only getting 1 or 2 things, I write it down...simply b/c with trying to remember what's been recalled I'll forget something. Dr. appointments I always write down b/c I'll forget them as well.

It seems that I don't use my brain properly. I often tell my friends that my memory is bad. If I forget what they have told me or other things, I want they forgive me.Sometimes it influences my life. Three days ago I forgot that whether I had locked my frontdoor or not when I drived at least 20 miles . So I have to turn back and check it. Then I did't be puctral for the appointment with my friend. She got angry when I saw her. I wasted my time and gas. What a bad thing!
So I decide to try what you say.Make some change!

I think loss of memory in younger people is not because of brain malfunctioning instead it depends on person's interests, suppose a person who hates taking medicine will never think of it eventually he will not consume it on prescribed time. But in case of elderly people brain's ability to remember decreases.

I used to doubt my memory but since I've read an article on how to improve memory, my attitude towards it had changed. First of all, stop telling yourself or others that your memory is bad or poor for subliminaly your brain eventually believes it. And then when you are trying to remember something, let's say...a title of a song, don't panic and don't force your brain to remember it. What I do is that I keep quiet for a while but still trying to wait for the answer to pop into my brain. Also, try to develop a system in remembering things. When I'm trying to remember a name of a person, I recite the alphabet one by one and a name starting with that letter until I get the correct answer. For example; A-Allan, Arnold, Arthur, B- Bill, Bob,... and so on. My boyfriend admires this system and he is using it now, too.

Very interesting. I think I'll give some of those things a try. I think that one reason elderly people lose their cognitive abilities is because their brains aren't exercised enough.
