Are Chat Rooms A Waste Of Time?

I have visited various chat rooms, and go through periods wondering if it is "worth it". Sometimes I go through cycles where I feel like chatting and then get turned off to it. I am wondering if my feelings are more or less universal.
I read somewhere that the online chat room is the greatest boon to procrastination ever to come along, lol. For sure, I am sure people chat to avoid doing things they SHOULD be doing. At other times, however, I think I could be useful...such as distraction from having a bad day, or event, or to just unwind and get your mind off yourself. What do you think?

I never visit chat rooms, mostly because they just seem to be full of people in private conversation, or they're full of people looking to cyber. Forums are slightly better.

I used to like chat rooms, like years ago.
But now I do find them a waste of time since they brought in the voice and video chat...I find that it isn't the same and no one really even talks unless they know you...sometimes I think it is fun how ever to go into some rooms and listen to people fight on the voice...the ones who are chat room "gangs" and pissed because a member of a nother chat room "gang" came into there "turf" lol its really amusing sometimes when you are bored
