You can't argue with ignorance...

This is something I've always wondering. It's a situation similar to; does the kid being made fun of know he's the butt of all jokes or does the slow car realize it's the slow car causing back ups in traffic. I always wonder if people who are closed-minded or ignorant, KNOW that they are close-minded or ignorant. In short: - to be closed-minded is to believe ONLY your beliefs and not be open to anything new or different. Your belief is RIGHT and everyone else's is WRONG. - ignorance is not having knowledge of particular situations and usually still having an opinion on it even though you don't really know what you're talking about. Personally I don't believe that I am. I have many opinions and I have my own beliefs but I never knock others for their opinions... unless I think their opinion is a cop out or blatantly ignorant. I definitely think there are a lot of closed-minded and ignorant people out there though. Here on mylot, in my school, at my job... everywhere but I wouldn't say that I'm one of them and I don't think anyone thinks that of me. I can back up all of my opinions and I let everyone believe what they believe. What about you? Do you think that you're closed-minded or ignorant? Do you ever wonder if people think that you are?

I believe I'm a pretty open minded & non-ignorant person. Though I must admit there probably are situations and things that I might be. So I would say that I am 99% both open minded and non-ignorant. If I don't know about something I try to keep my mouth shut but there could be opinions formed and out they might come :)

Well you're someone I definitely don't see as being either! 99% is always a safe percentage! Yeah I guess no one is really 100% perfect, and I'm sure I'm pretty stubborn. But I think the key is being able to legitimetly (that's spelled sooo wrong!) back up any of your opinions and such with reasons. I mean if you can back up your opinions than it's okay. I just notice so many people have such invalid opinions with nothing to back it up. Not to mention how many people don't let others stand up for their own opinions...cause if it's not the same as them, it's not right!

I know what you're saying. There is A LOT of it here. I know there is in 'real' life too but it seems to be more noticeable here :)

Oh it's totally noticeable here. But I notice it in real life, especially at my job, on a daily basis. Sometimes it's just so annoying!

I'm neither. I have my own opinions, many of them I'm passionate about, but I would never argue with someone or judge them based on an opinion. I'm like you that I don't let certain things slide though. Like, if you're just making up something to say you're right and I'm wrong, then I'm going to call you out. I also never argue something with made up 'facts'. If I'm going to argue about something, I'm going to have the correct information or knowledge before I run my mouth. I work with several close-minded people and it bugs me. They are more than welcome to have differering opinions, but that's never good enough for them, you know? They're the type of people that will try to argue you down and sway you their way, but I don't go for that. Ignorance is bliss after all, and they can continue to be blissfully happy.:P I don't understand why people have such a difficult time with different opinions.

ha ha. I know. I work with a lot of old people and it's amazing how closed-minded and ignorant they are. They're so set in their ways and so unaware of how the world has changed around them. It's not the same as it was when they were growing up. You know... it's just that they don't want to see the world the way it is anymore and live in their own world. I HATE that. I butt heads with this one guy I work with all the time because he just has the most closed-minded and ignorant opinions on EVERYTHING and 96% of the time he's completely got things all wrong. I just think it's ridiculously. He always argues with me and I always win :)

I am pretty open minded and have long since accepted that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I also dont think its right to force my views onto other people. If they feel like that so be it. I'll try and put my views across but if people are not receptive.. what the hey.. i dont lose a thing.

That's always the best way to be. To have your own opinions and convictions but not to abuse them and/or force them upon anyone else.

Whether I am closed-minded or ignorant is not really important. It all depends on the situation. However, I do insist on my right if I am maligned. As to what people think of me, I leave it to them. It's all very subjective as the perception of me is also dependent on whether that person is closed-minded or ignorant.

Well considering the question I asked was whether you thought you were closed-minded or ignorant, so I'd have to say I think it is rather important. You're right though and it always varies on situations and such. However, this was a generic question...meant to be answered in the generic way. But good answer nonetheless.

I don't believe I'm close minded. Nor do I think I'm a particularly ignorant person, by the definition you provide, although I occasionally play one on MyLot. :-) Anyone that voices a strong a opinion or belief can be accused of being ignorant, I think. I'm never too sure where the line is drawn. But I just know some people are ignorant. It's mostly related to how strongly they express their opinion as fact, and how insensitive they are to other people's opinions and beliefs. So for me, being ignorant is the same as being closed-minded.

Yes, that does clarify the difference quite well. I think anyone that is close-minded is likely to be ignorant as well, to a degree, because they will be ignoring certain information. Just not as ignorant, maybe, as someone that just doesn't know anything. I can see how someone could be open-minded but still be ignorant. Although this doesn't say much for their intelligence.

I have to disagree. I don't think people are accused of being ignorant simple because they have strong opinions. I'd say they'd be more accused of closed-mindedness. I don't think Ignorant and Closed-minded are the same at all. I think they're similar, but not the same. Someone who is ignorant could be open to new ideas, they just don't know anything. Someone who is closed-minded is open to anything other than their own ideas. which could be ignorant. they go hand in hand sometimes, but I think there is a difference.

well i would say i am pretty much open minded,i believe everyone is entiltled to their own opinion and if i give my imput and they dont like what i say then i cant do anything about it,they are entitled to their own saying.but your right there is so many ignorant people out there that dont care what they say or if they hurt anyones feelings,i couldnt do that intentiontly.i would always want to back up my opinions as well.

That's why I dislike politics and religion so much. It's filled with closed-mindedness and ignorance. No matter which way you try to argue it, you're right and they're wrong. Not everyone of course, but a lot of them. It's quite sad to because some of that is just so personal and if you don't like what people think about your beliefs imagine how they feel when you're bashing theirs. You know? People are crazy hurtful.

I don't think I am. I tend to listen to all sides of the story and tend to keep my opionions to myself if they don't matter. I have had some people act like I was being close minded if I didn't want to try something or do something the way they would - but I just thought they were close minded and couldn't see things my way :-D I can see others POV on things, but then still not agree with them at all. However some people may think I am the close minded one. The main reason I think I am not close minded is b/c I am willing to drop the argument even when others want to keep it going. I'm all for the "agree to disagree" and I think that's an open minded thing to do! People who insist on arguing every point until you agree with them 100%, those are the close minded people b/c they just won't give it up!

I've been accused of being closed-minded, but I think that assumption is erroneous. I don't refuse to try new things or listen to other points of view, however, I do quickly discard anything that I know will not work. Because I know myself well and have always known what I wanted in life and what I valued well, I can very quickly say whether I agree or disagree with something and why, and some people mistake this as being closed-minded but sometimes when people offer a different prespective, they act as if I am discarding it from my way of thinking because I've never been exposed to it... when in fact, I have been exposed to it a myriad of times in one way or another which is why I have already decided against it. This always really irks me because there is a difference between having solid, strongheld values and beliefs that come from knowing yourself well and being closed-minded. As for being ignorant, I think everyone's ignorant in some things. What I hate is when ignorant people are made out to be the experts while the ones who actually know what they're doing are overlooked or ignored. I think I am able to recognize when I don't know enough about something in order to delve deep into it and am always ready to learn more if it's something I am interested in. So no, I wouldn't say I am closed-minded or ignorant. I think some people do think I am, but I think they're just looking at the superficial and are therefore mistaken.

I love the word erroneous! Ha ha. you sound very much like me. I mean, honestly, you sound exactly like me! I definitely think and know that people think that I am closed-minded at least, because I have such strong convictions, but I'm so open to anything and everything it's almost hurtful, except I don't care enough to be hurt, when they think otherwise. I guess no one would really fess up to being closed-minded anyway, but it was still a curious question you know? Like I said...does that kid know he's the bunt of every joke. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't but would they admit to it is the real question. But everyone will take their chance to get a stab at someone else and accuse them of closed-mindedness.

I dont believe that I am, however on the note that every one sees things from a different point of view, then I am sure that someone out in this wide world thinks that I am. Everything is a possiblity.

well considering this question was asking your opinion and opinions are like butt holes, everyones got them... than your opinion was what I was asking for and it's a given that everyone will see it differently. that's the point of a discussion and an opinion. in any case, that's good that you don't think you are. I'm sure no one does. But again the point was to find out if ANYONE does.
