I do. I have to. We are a family of 6 on minimum wage, and it can be hard. I cook everything from scratch, even the gravy because we cant afford gravy granules lol.. After christmas I am going to concentrate on growing my own vegetables and herbs. Do you make everything yourself to save money? Or do you buy everything prepared??

I always think that when you cook from scratch that it always tastes a lot better than if you cooked with jars and packets. I kinda make up my own recipes sometimes with what I have.. but never hand up a poor meal to my family..

I'm single and I only shop for me and my cat and I like to shop at walmart. You can get a lot of non perishable items for really cheap. Plus the fresh stuff is cheaper than anything else at grocery stores. I don't have a lot of money so I totally shop as cheaply as I can!

I think it's pointless to waste money on the "close to expiration" stuff. cause i'd never eat it before it goes bad. so I'll spend money to let something go bad in my fridge. I never buy fresh stuff unless the "sell by" date isn't for at least 1 week from the day I bought it.

I always think that the fresh stuff is always cheaper.... especially if you go about half hour before the store closes. The best day to do this is on a saturday evening. They cut the prices on fresh items that are near there use by date, but these will still be fresh. The stores dont want to be left with a load of products that will persish over the weekend!!!

I cook from scratch most of the time, although it's only me and I could probably afford to buy things ready made. I don't think all those convenience foods are good for us. Too much salt, too much sugar and heaven knows what kind of chemicals that we don't need. Besides, food cooked from scratch tastes better.

I probably use too much salt, but at least I know how much, it isn't hidden.

You are right there!!! At least there are no additives, or colourings in the foods we make ourselves. The only thing that I dont do is add salt. My husband and I usually add this ourselves. I dont like our kids using salt, I have heard too many horror stories about kids having salt...... :-)

I cook most everything from scratch. We have a family of 5 and spend about $60/week. That includes diapers, TP, cleaning/grooming products, school lunches, etc. I do use a few packaged things like mac & cheese, but not often. Most stuff is totally from scratch. Tastes better that way too!

Yes I know what you mean. We are a family of six. have 3 under 3 and just got the oldest one out of diapers. So that saves some money. Diapers are so expensive. Our weekly shop come to about 80. And trying to make it stretch is hard at times too.

We had to cook on a budget for many years. It CAN be hard. I still had to buy the generic gravy packets to flavor my gravy. I can't make home-made gravy to save my life! Most of the things I made were not dishes you could really buy already made, anyway. Back when the boys were growing up, there was no packaged Chipped Beef and Gravy, no Smothered Chicken, Beef Tips over Rice or Pepper Steak. If they WERE pre-packaged, we couldn't afford them. I did grow some of our vegetables. Purple bell peppers, green beans and tomatoes. I'd start the seeds in cardboard eggcartons of soil in the house windows. The birds couldn't wipe me out that way.

Its only since I started to work in a restaurant that I learnt how easy stuff was to make at home. and most of the ingredients were in my kitchen any ways. So it works out great for me. The money I save on cooking from scratch means that I can buy something extra, such as a bar of cooking chocolate to make chocolate sauce for the kids ice-cream!!! I must remember that about the egg cartons, thanks!!!

I do!! not to save money but because I like it better when I know what actually went into the food I am going to eat.

I do too. Thats a downfall about working in a restaurant, you know too much about how things are made!!!

We do too. We are saving money because we have a lot of debt to pay off, so everything has to be made from scratch. We can't really grow our own veggies, because we live in an apartment and also because we are not good with plants - they end up dying.

I think it tastes a lot better when effort is put into it. We have a really big garden that we have devided in two, half is for the kids with their swings and stuff, and the other half is for my veggies and herbs.........

I cook everything from scratch. Not only does it save money...it tastes better. We live on a limited income and try to stretch the dollar as far as it can go. I love to cook so we decided we would stretch this way. We grew our own tomatoes this year. I have alot of frozen tomatoes for soups, stews and such.

Yes we grew our own tomatoes this year too but we had a very bad crop this year because of the weather. We havent got a proper greenhouse so we depended on the weather for them to ripen!!! hopefully we will do better next year. I love to cook too, so I am able to come up with new ideas for dinners with what I find in the cupboards. And working in a restaurant kitchen helps too!!!!
