There's a world of difference depending on what kind of bird you get. I had never had birds until I met my husband. He had a cockatiel that we still have who is a truly cool little bird. He always clips her wings and she lives on a shelf instead of in a cage. Sometimes he even takes her out in the car with him. In fact this is the way I met her, when he had her on his shoulder when he came to visit me. Freaked me out at the time. Now I'm very comfortable with her on my shoulder.
Bigger birds can be a headache (not to mention expensive) and smaller birds can be kind of yappy in the same way a small dog is sometimes. But I love that cockatiel. I would encourage you to check it out.

At my apt. you would hear two ring neck doves cooing and I find them to be very pleasant and relaxing. I even have mailmen to stop and ask me what do I have? I also have two amazon parrots here that belong to my daughter and I am being a care giver for feather friends. They try to out do each other in voice and whistle. When you talk, they MUST talk over the top of your voice. They can be noisy, but great fun and company.

Birds make very good pets if you ask me. They are good looking (unless you have a crow), they are pretty harmless and easy to handle.

Depends on the bird and if they were hand-raised. Most birds can be nice pets and are affectionate but even more so if you get one that was hand-raised since birth.

They're very different. Little birs like budgie (what some call parakeets) are cute and noisy and quite dirty too, but they are fun. Larger birds, like the Quakers are smart as a whip, you can talk to them and teach them to talk to you, and they do tricks. I had a blast with my birds, but I have too many cats now for my bird to survive. When my kids leave, I will have a bird again.
