Has anyone heard of this site? I saw it on Oprah the other day. It's a site that you join up to and it's basically about lending whatever you can (i think the minimum is $25) to someone in another country who is struggling to build their business. All you need to do is loan a small amount of money and once their business is up and running, they pay you back monthly. It's a great idea and doesn't cost you anything in the end, it's just giving them the headstart that they need. www.kiva.org

I think this a great idea; I checked it out. When I earn money (I'm getting paid soon), I'll donate. This is a great idea. Go Oprah!

I heard about this site from a friend who's got £1,000 "invested" in it (if that's the right word). I've been fascinated with this concept ever since he explained it to me. It's better than charity in my opinion, because it's helping people to support themselves and maybe provide sustainable employment to others, and the people on the receiving end keep their pride because they repay the loans. Also you know exactly where your money is going, which isn't the case with most charitable donations. I'm not in a position to put any money into this at the moment, because I'm in the process of building my own small business up, but one of my goals is to be in a position to join Kiva in a couple of years or less.

I just happened to put Kiva in the search and your discussion came up, even though it is an old one. I use Kiva and I love it. I've made several loans now and it gives me a very good feeling to know that I've helped someone out. I enjoy making a loan every payday. I try to lend to someone in a different country each time and for a different sector each time.

Kiva is great. And right now they are running a special, try it out for free. They will fund your first $25 loan. Won't cost you a cent. You won't get $25 paid back to you, but hey, join anyway to help others for free.
