Why is it that doctors call what they DO "PRACTICE"?

"I practice surgery." Why is it that doctors call what they DO "PRACTICE"? what do you think?

Yes, it is kind of scary that doctors are still practising on us, but that seems to be the case. It's true that they will probably never perfect their craft but they are always learning.
