Prejudice is prevalent everywhere. I've lived all over the US and it's everywhere, although I see it more towards black or Latino people than anyone else, especially in Texas. I've seen an open expression of prejudice against a white person maybe once in my life? Even then, it wasn't aimed directly at that person, just when she was there. I've had plenty of people assume I was looking for a handout, out to get them, rude, uneducated, or desperately poor just because I'm black and rocked the natural look. You can be dressed to the nines; suits, ties, beautiful Italian leather shoes, cleanly shaven, well-groomed and still be denied a basic right because of your skin color. It happens all the time. It actually happened to me again yesterday at Wal-mart and still makes me mad. I think young black men have it the worst though. To think of some of the things my son will have to learn to deal with before he even hits adulthood absolutely infuriates me - but there's very little I can do about it other than try to prepare him and ensure he has a solid, well-established sense of himself.
Blessed Be
