Tasers are they really safe?

Hi I just saw a news report about a man who got off a plane acting strange and ended up getting tasered by RCMP. The man died just moments after being tased. This is not the first death involving a taser. Yes the majority of people have no long term problems after being tasered, however a few do end up dead. I wonder if there may be a safer way to deal with out of control people that may not be as risky. What do you think?
