How bad do stink bugs "stink"? (and what to do about them)

Around this time of year, we have many unwelcome visitors entering our home: the infamous "stinkbugs". My first instinct is to squash them, but since they supposedly stink when they are killed, I just scoop them up and put them outside. I guess that's not such a great idea either, since the "rescued" stinkbugs are obviously forming an army out there. Is the smell they release really that bad? I mean, seriously, if I kill one stinkbug inside will I want to move out of my house because of the smell? And does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with these pesky buggers?
