How would you react in an emergency?

I have the tv on while I'm surfing the web (my baby is a napping in my lap). We just got one of the tests from the Emergency Broadcast System. It got me wondering. How would you react if you saw that and it wasn't a test? There was some major disaster coming your way? Would you panic and be paralyzed? Would you take charge and do what's necessary? Would you wait out a hurricane or tornado in your own basement? Or go to some disaster center? If it was something like a very severe winter storm - are you prepared as far food and blankets or would you have to risk you well being going to the store?

We've had a number of severe winter storms that completely immobilized NYC for a long time--it's almost eerie..the whole city literally stops....no traffic can go through the streets for maybe at least four or five days..hardly any people out...But storms never seemed to have deterred me from going out especially if I need some groceries--uh, usually cat food..heaven forbid my kitties starve...or even silly things like needing toilet paper..LOL

Lol. Some day I want all of these things in my house in bulk so if there is a severe storm with snow too deep to walk or drive in or any other thing that would prevent me - maybe lack of money at one point -there will always be food, etc in storage.
I've walked to the store too during these times - I even went with a roomate to get - icecream!

I am always prepared. I have food, water and cash stored at all times. We have plenty of blankets, a wood heater which can be used for cooking also, oil lamps, flashlights, batteries, all of that. We are a family of three and have food stores to easily last three weeks, more if we conserve. I did wait out Huurricane Fran in my house and did quite well for the 9 days we had no power or water, and I was living in the city. Now I live in the country and we have a full basement so our emergency stores are even more complete. Since our home is concrete block and has a basement we will wait out whatever comes right here. this house has survived two hurricanes and five tornadoes with minimal damage, my granddad built it and built it to stay lol. We are probably safer here than we'd be in our town's shelter.

Wow how perfect. My husband and I have plans to buy some land and have a house that will protect us from all kinds of disasters. We talk about gathering supplies but haven't fully yet. We do get catalogs so that we can eventually do so.
Have fun mylotting!

I'm not used of those disaster situations you mentioned, but I believe we have the same instincts when dealing with emergencies. As for strong and disastrous weather coming right into our place, I'd still consider our house safe and secure. As for earthqualkes or other situations, I think I already know how to deal with it. I go to seminars such emergency procedures and proper pre-cautions, I'm much aware of these things though I don't think I'm prepared (mentally) to deal with such.
As for foods and storing extra items, I always keep and do a routine check-up on them.

Wow, you sound like me - only I want to be prepared in that way but haven't gotten there yet! And I want to build a home - like a dome home that can more easily withstand tornados, hurricanes, fire, etc. When Louisiana was hit and all of those homes were completely devastated, the round homes took very little damage, all of it superficial.
You are so smart to take those kinds of classes. I think you've hit the nail n the head, we may plan everything out - escape plans for fires and such with your kids, and other things you need to deal with these situations- including education, but when faced how we would deal with things eotionaly.

I have been through the real thing and I got out the flashlights and told the children what to do if the tornado did hit us and we did fine I was alone at home with the children. The little one was crying because she was scared but I told her it would be alright and everything did come out alright.

Hi Marque, I think its wonderful that in an emergency, you will think of and take care of your family - making sure they're safe - and not just save your own skin! I hope you also have the prescence of mind to save documents. Did you know there are containers that you can always keep your papers in that will protect them from things like flood and fire. I'm sure you could find it on the web.

Wow, I'd probably have some initial panic but hopefully I'd regain my sense. I'd check for whoever is in the house first and maybe instruct them to go to safety and then text those that are not here. What country are you from? I don't think we have that here in the Philippines.

sauldejesus, it really sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. Not only that, you will think of others and not only try to save your own skin. I'm in the United States.

Hi artemis,
I am sorry to say that I am not good at managing emergencies. Actually, I hadn't been into many as yet. I live with my parents and whenever an emergency comes they take charge of it. However, if at all i am to handle it, I think I would try to keep my cool - that should be the foremost thing one should do. I would move my parents to the safer place with lots of food and water. I would rather carry my parents' favorite stuffs than my own and I think by the time I finish off with this the disaster will start to devastate. jokes apart, I think this is a very serious issue and with increasing calamities we should all learn to handle it judiciously.

Initially, I would become nervous, if it is a real disaster and it comes without any warning. But soon I will gather my wits and will arrange to save the lifes and material things, whatever I can. I feel in case of a disaster saving one' life becomes more important.
God forbid, I have not faced any such things so far in my life.
Excellent Post indeed!

I have had 2 emergency broadcasts come on tv for a tornado. The first time i was freaking out because my boyfriend was at work and I couldn't get a hold of him because they were taking shelter also. I live on the 2 floor of an apartment and didn't really know anybody that well, I got my son dressed, grabbed my phone purse and some juice for my son. Everyone was standing out side waiting for the tornado, I would have been too if it was just myself but since I had someone else's life in my hands I wanted to play it safe and went down in the basement all the way in the corner. A couple trees ended up falling but the tornado didn't hit us thankfully. The second time was actually about a month ago and my boyfriend had just left to work, I started to notice that it got really dark and the wind was blowing like crazy. I turned on the weather channel and a tornado was headed towards are town and had cause major damages in the other cities near by. I really started freaking out because it had picked up speed and where my apartment is you can't really see a lot since there are trees that surround us. I decided to just go next door and we watched the news together, the tornado then started heading in a different direction, I was so happy. I then made friends with the girl next door which is nice in the day when my boyfriend is at work, i can just go next door when I am bored.

I have a baby now, and it is funny how things change. I might've been outside watching for the tornado as well. I have a ten month son so I would be setting up a barricade in an inner part of the first floor of the house.
Its nice that you've made friends with your neighbors - for boredom and storms. Have fun mylotting and thanks so much for particiapting.
