What is your greatest fear that isn't of a thing but of doing a thing. So I'm not looking for fear of snakes or bees - but rather fear of say leaving the house, intimacy, committment, flying, talking in front of a crowd etc...How do you think this fear developed and do you work on it?

I have a fear of flying. I refuse to get in any airplanes no matter what. I don't think I'll ever work on this fear. I'm just tooo scaried to even try it. I've been called chicken and everything but I don't care, I won't do it. I even do't care to go to airports or drive by one especially if theres planes taking off or landing. I guess I'm just a punk for flying or being off my feet.

So no sky diving for you? There are so many other ways to travel - and really - train, bus, or car - you will see so much more and the trip will be an experience in iteslf. Where do you think the fear came from.

You must walk everywhere too with all the horrible car crashes - like that one in the tunnel - or that recent bridge accident.

As you may know I've been a panic disorder with agoraphobic person...at one time in my life it was so bad I couldn't leave the apartment at all without having panic attacks..Long time ago, I did start seeing a therapist who specialized in this problem, and he actually made house calls! Unfortunately I had to stop around 1987 when finances changed and at the time didn't have SSI benefits or Medicaid to help pay..wouldn't have mattered as he, like so many really good therapist out there don't take Medicaid..I did well without the therapy for about three years but then had a serious setback..no I didn't become housebound again but became limited again of where or how long I could stay out..Then more "detours" in my life came that hampered any recovery...A lot of those detours were created by my mother who I suspect had a major phobia of her own...the idea that if I did succeed and overcame my problem, then moved out, she'd be alone in life--so it seemed she had a canny knack of creating "disasters" in our lives that prevented me from trying to overcome my problem. As for how I got this condition....not a clue..I had so many goals and dreams...a real go-getter filled with hope and promise... As for now..yes, I'm working on it...I make a point of getting out everyday...in fact I'm now the opposite...can't STAND to be home all day..get a real case of cabin fever then..LOL--so I guess that in itself is progress.

Losing forever my near and dear ones is possibly the greatest fear of anyone, anywhere. Leaving that aside, my greatest fear is to discover some weird looking stranger in my house at night when I am completely alone. We live ina abig three storey house and when my parents are out of station, I am completely alone like a ghost. What about you, artemis?

Staying alone in a big house can be scary for me.

My biggest fear probably is to lose a person that i love in any way.I am always a person who easily get attached to things that's why I have trouble letting go when the time comes that it needs letting go. How much more for the people that I care about. Sometimes I get too paranoid that sometimes I can be too overprotective of the people that I love.

You must be a loyal a loving friend and family member. Have you lost someone - do you think that's why? Where do you think the fear came from?

one fear I have is of the dark .......pretty pathetic huh? Alot of times I'll be too scared to fall asleep when its really late and dar outside. So I stay up until it starts to get light outside.Only then I can safely and soundly fall asleep . Another ear I have is of losing one of my close famil members.I can't even picture my life without my sister or mom or dad with me

Its not pathetic at all to be afraid of the dark - it can be a scary place. Only it doesn't really fit into my discussions. So I'm totally confused. My question isn't about being afraid of a thing - but of doing a thing - as I said, talking in front of people, or flying that kind of thing. I can see you're new so you may not be aware that you're actually supposed to READ the discussion and answer it - not just the title. BTW I think its so sweet what you said not being able to imagine your mom or sister or dad. Don't worry, you're new, you'll get the hang of it. We're a friendly lot here on mylot - always here to help. Thanks!
