Islam is against idol worship, why do Muslims worship and bow down to the Kaaba?

Kaaba is the Qibla ie the direction Muslims face during their prayers. It is important to note that though Muslims face the Kaaba during prayers, they do not worship the Kaaba.
Wouldn't one call the Kaaba as a symbol/ idol towards which they turn during their prayers ?
If YES, then why grudge the other religions from having their own symbol/ idols ?

Historical evidence sates that Mecca is an old hindu temple and it is a shiva temple practicing idol worship.Any how it is an old story, and there is no need to talk about it and create problem amoung different relegions. For me there is only one God ie God of love.
