teenagers and fascination with "emo"

I am really struggling with dealing with my teens fascination with "emo"-a person who cuts themselves. My oldest son has admitted to me that he did "try" it. We had a really long talk and I told him that I do not want him doing that anymore-he needs to come talk with me.
I don't know how else to get rid of the fascination that this brings. I don't want to be mean and controlling, telling them they can't listen to certain bands, etc...but I am worried that maybe continuing to let them listen to their choice in music and seeing graphic pictures and cartoons that make "light" of the subject isn't helping them understand how serious and dangerous this "past-time" is.
Does anyone else have this problem or have a solution that I might find helpful? Thanks.

well truly, the emo fashion is just a fad, sooner or later he will just dress emo but not really cut himself. So just talk about it with em but sooner or later he wont cut himself anymore.

Im in the UK ... and i have to say from what my eldest tells me it is all a stereo type sayin that emos cut themselves! ... she is 14 not an emo but had lots of emo friends .......she says that they are just very emotional and express themselves through clothes and music! ..
Im sure there are some who self harm but im sure that there must be somthing within them which troubles them whether they are emo or not! ... I think emo is similar to when we were kids and they had goths!

Yeah I've been hearing about this. I don't really see the big deal anyways. Try to talk to your son more because god forbid that something worse happens.
