Well the deer seaon is upon us here in Minnesota. I don't mean the hunting seasoon either. Its mating time and the deer are all over. I have come close to hitting a few these last few days as well. "Autumn is prime season for deer-vehicle crashes in Minnesota, according to environmental authorities. From 2004-2006 13,124 deer-vehicle crashes occurred, killing 13 and resulting in 1,449 injuries." Here's some helpful tips for avoiding deer or what to do if you do hit one. Please be careful on the roads all especially with the deer all about. Thanks. http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=4675199&version=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1 HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Thanks for that Grandpa! It sure brought it home that's for sure because the other night on the way back from my parents place, I rounded a bend and knowing I saw kittens on the side of the road before I slowed down and was looking for them and went to speed up after passing the area, I looked up and lo and behold!! A deer right in front of me!! I slammed on my brakes and just barely and I mean just barely missed it!! Talking about scaring the hell out of me!! Whew! My heart was pounding as if it were going to jump out of my chest!! My husband was with me and he didn't see it either till I did. He wants to get those things called deer horns but I don't know if they really work or if it's a joke for someone to make more money off of the customer. Do you know if they work or not? I'd like to know the truth in the matter if ANYONE knows.

I had some of those little whistles/horns and they never worked really. Last fall driving home from getting the wife she had fallen asleep. Suddenly a huge doe jumped in front of the car. I swerved to avoid it. As I did the deer alra ran across the car right next to my wifes window. She woke up from the swerving and was startled seeing a deer right in her window. I mean it was just inches from the window. That was the closet call for me as far as hitting a dear. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

YIKES!! What a rude awakening! Poor wife of yours! I bet she was awake for a while after that! Hope it doesn't happen like that anymore! Anyway, thanks for your input on the horns. I thought they were a joke.

I got your meaning there as I've read the 11 paragraph articles at that link just now. The articles was last edited on 18 Oct. 2007, 1:23PM CDT. And as advice by Cheri Marti, The Director of The Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, "The best safety is to belt up and don't veer for deer.". Good advice as to avoid for our moving car rams into next lane and hits the oncoming car. Jeopardizing more life and cause accident cases. Thanks Grandpa Bob for providing.

True so true. I have always been adefensive driver and I also feel that is what's kept me from hitting any deer to this day. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Its deer hitting season here in Ohio too. A good friend of mine recently hit a deer and tore up his truck. We all have to be especially careful of deer.

I have been fortunate enough to have never hit a derr. I have come VERY close many times. Especially in the last month. The problem I have is that I live within a mile of a Nature Center that has a lot of deer in it. And I live in a good sized city also not rural area. I am maybe 10 miles from Downtown Minneapolis. UGh... I know how annoying those 4 legged beauties are! What is worse, is when driving on a gravel road, in the middle of the night. Knock on wood, I've never hit one. My BIL did, once... with our new truck. (OK, it was used, but we had only had it a week!) They do a lot of damage. A few years back, we were in Maine, and they have moose crossing signs up about as often as we have deer crossing. I don't think i'd ever like to run across a moose! BTW... thanks for the link!! :)

Anytime. Once a few years back near an elementary school I saw a deer jump into the road. A car swerved avoiding hitting the deer. Now get this ironic twist. The woman avopided the deer but the truck behind her hit it & the deer flew right into her back window destroying her car completely. 2 vehicles totaled with one hit deer. Deer Crossing...beware! - deer in a field
I find those statistics to be very sad. You would think drivers realized they are driving in an are where there are a lot of "deer crossing"..lol...I know they post signs so why aren't these drivers more careful?

I live i a fairly large city and there are deer all over the place even on city streets. The problem is the animals have moved into the city from rural areas as of late due to needing easy acess to food it seems. I've come very close a few times this month alone to hitting fawns and does. I have seen a few carcasses as well right on my street side a few blocks away. Sad isn't it? And to be honest if a deer is on the highway there is not much one can do when it jumps in front of your vehicle when you're traveling at 55 MPH. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Hi,there. Here it is so full of deer, its not the deer we are scared of hitting, its the moose. We live deep in the woods(our town)and the nearest town is 1 hour in either direction.Only wood is all you see when driving out of town. They stand in the middle of the road and just look at you, like a big slow cow.Its rare to hit a deer here, its always the moose all year round getting hit. Yeah I understand that aspect. When I travel to the farm up north theres a lot of Moose and Black Bears along the roads as well. Hit a bear and that will kill the driver most times as they are upwardas of 600 pounds up north. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

We have the same problem with kangaroos. The smaller ones aren't so bad, but the very big roos in the north can cause a great deal of damage. People in the far north have "roo bars" on their vehivles. The can cause the car to roll at full speed. I believe deers are very big, so they must be real problem.

Ive happily never ever gotten close to hitting a deer while driving. My little brother hit a deer once while drvinig his bike though lol. Our family came blasting down a biiiiig hill at high speeds, we were racing each other for the end of the hill for the hell of it :D Suddenly out of nowhere bounces a deer and my brother panics and forgets to steer or brake and hammers right into it. Luckily the deer was in a lot better shape than my brothers bike and went away instantly, but my brother had to abandon the bike and wait for my dad to return with the car to pick him up.

The curvy roads here in Arkansas are prime for these types of accidents as well...there are literally hundreds of deer out on the rural roads during certain hours every day here.... These tips will be useful for many people...thanks for taking the time to post them, my friend...

This is basicvally geared for the city residents in and near Minneapolis Minnesota though. We have many deer car collisions in the city. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~
