My "walking" partner! - My big dog that needs obedience classes

Ok....so I'm supposed to be starting my walking regimen to try to tone up before my upcoming surgery. I decided to be ambitious tonight and take my lab/pit bull mix, Buddy, for a walk. I am NOT....I repeat: NOT....did I mention: NOT?...ever doing that again until he has gone through obedience training. I had an idea already that he would be a bit rambunctious since he was only two years old and still in his "bouncy stage". What an UNDERSTATEMENT! First off, it took about 10 minutes to get him out of the yard, because one of the cats was up on the fence teasing the heck out of him. And he pulled so hard on the leash, that where it was wrapped around my hand, it squeezed tight enough that I think it cracked one of the bones in my pinkie! So after all of that, we finally get going. On the way back, a little Chihuahua decided to be little mister tough guy (after he got a half block away of course) and start barking. Buddy about had me tied up in a knot twisting around me with the leash. I got untangled from that....and then came the ordeal of getting him back into the back yard. The cat was in the same spot, doing the same teasing, so that took about 5 minutes of pulling and...yes....cussing. Then we get to the side yard, where there are lots of big spaces in the wooden fence because it's so old and worn out. And one of the neighbor's little irritating mutt type dogs decided HE was going to be little mister tough guy too and try to come through the fence at Buddy, but thankfully the spaces aren't THAT wide. So what does Buddy do? He lunges at the fence, and I just barely managed to pull him back just as he broke one of the vertical boards. If he had broken through, I don't think the neighbor would have any dogs left alive or in one piece. The last hurdle was getting Buddy's obnoxious butt through the back gate, which my daughter was able to do...I made her come get him after the board broke so I could throw things at the fence to get the little dogs away from it. What an ordeal! I will be lucky if I can even get out of bed in the morning! LOL Thanks everyone for letting me rant and rave for a bit. I think I'm going to go take another pain pill and crawl under my covers of my comfy bed and whimper. Hahahaha! Hugs to all!

Ummmmmmm.....we can tell your more of a cat person than dog person, Kat. lol I have a 6yr. old Lab/pit cross as well but, unlike you, Dom went to obedience classes only cause he's a very dominate dog and I was having a hard time obedience training him myself. One thing he knows he can't get away with when mommy is at the other end of the leash is pulling/tugging/circles. Mom stops him in his tracks when he even thinks about it but he's real good at testing other ppl and will do that stuff if they allow it. Also, is he neutered? Good luck with his training cause he needs it. lol

Yes, my cats have me trained right where they want me. LOL! Buddy is neutered. He's just very active and rambunctious. Like I said, walking him is out of the question until he goes to school. I informed my son that until then, it's HIS job to walk Buddy. Hahaha

When we first got Lucy she was not used to being taken for walks. She was very strong and determined to do her own thing it made taking her fora walk really uncomfortable. It was suggested I get a device called a "Halti" which is like a halter for a horse. Instead of pulling on her collar which must hurt her throat and choke her, this allows us to steer her my turning her whole head in the direction we want her to go. After using it for sometime, it's now ok to take her for walks without it as she now understands better. We were also able to enforce a few commands too like sitting at the curb, crossing on command and waiting if she is pulling ahead. It also put us in contrrol of our dog which is the proper thing. Dogs belong to a pack and there is a pecking order. In a family, the dog is at the bottom of the pecking order and if he gets to have his own way, he gets confused. Hope the two of you are getting better at it by now.

Poor you! And poor Buddy. He's got so much energy he must be dying to let it out. : ) You know what they say about those Chihuahuas, they have a doberman brain in a midget body. LOL You tell such a good story. I can just see that teasing cat!

Oh, for the love of pete, what were you thinking PPP?....LOL..He sure does need some manners...You need to call Cesar Milan..The dog whisperer to come to your rescue..He will shape Buddy up in a heart beat...What a nightmare!! I am sure your body is going to HATE you forever now...LOL...

No, she doesn't need the dog whisperer all she needs is a lessen in how to use a check chain correctly. A couple of good tugs and release on the check chain and he should be a different dog on the leash. Some obedience training would not go astray neither I like polite dogs who do as they are told most of the time.(wink, wink)

Hahahahahaha I am sorry Kat but I just have to laugh I can just imagine the whole scene It must be a thing with little Dogs barking at big ones because Gissi does it to lol so it is a good Job we do not live close by as you would have another little Terror there barking at him And Gissi teases them to because when he knows they get wound up by his Barking but they can't get to him he will prance about with his head in the Air and letting out barks to me it always seems he is laughing at them lol Oh dear I do hope that you where ok the next Day lol Love and Hugs to you

First of all beautiful dog. I love pit bulls and mixes. Now I know exactly what you mean almost to a tee because when I take mine out there are neighbourhood cats that like to tease mine to. Why is it a pit bull has to muzzled, fixed and only allowed on a 3 foot leash why all these other animals get to run free and everything.

Having learned from remarkably similar experiences, I let Hun do the leash training, and the necessary refresher courses. I would end up looking like a cartoon, being dragged down the street by a 4 lb. dog, if I tried to do it myself! Thanks for the big laughs... hope you can recover quickly!LOL!

All dogs are like that at the begining they need to get use to walking that is all. If you don't walk him regularly he will never learn. My suggestion if you can do it again. is to warap the leash end around one of you hands and then hold about foot down the leash in your other hand. With the dog on the side with the other hand. Sorry if this is confusing. Your dog should be right by your side preet much every time he pulls just tug on the leash. Everytime you stop ask him to sit. Eventually he will catch on. Good luck. I love to walk my lab but I must admit she was alot to handle at first now she will walk herself next to me with the leash in her mouth.
