How can a shy 26 year old make friends?

Hello all, I am a 26 year old female from PA usa. All my life I have been very shy. Highschool and College for me consisted of 2 or 3 real good friends and maybe a small handful of aquaintances, mostly I would eat by myself and keep to myself in class etc. I have severe social and general anxiety.
For a long time in highschool, when someone would talk to me I would find an excuse to leave or move my seat, etc because I would get so extremely nervous and uncomfortable. I never went to any of the dances or school functions.
I've had the same best friend now for over 20 years and only really close to her because we grew up together.
I do have a boyfriend currently, I have been with him for almost 5 years now. But he lives about 2 hours away so I only see him about once a month, so hanging out with him or his friends isn't really a viable option.
I'm what I would call a She-geek. I love videogames, anime, cosplay, roleplay, dnd, world of darkness etc. But I have no one to share my hobbies with. :

I'm very shy as well.And my best friend is abroad.I hang out with my sisters every time.Thank godness,we have the same hobbies.So i think you may hang out with your sisters or just your mother.Could you tell me what anime is?(I'm not at English,and can't understand)Thanks a lot.By the way ,you're not old!

Anime is a type of cartoon from japan.
I'm an only child. I have no brothers or sisters.

I am meeting a few friends at a local anime convention this spring. But that will only last for a few days and then they will be going back to their hometowns/states/whatever. Most of the people I consider good online friends don't seem to live anywhere near me :P must just be my bad luck.

Well Iam not sure if this will help but there is A gothic dances on hollowen at shampoo In philly I know Some PPL that are going and would get a long with you Iam like you and was asked to go but said no
my wife realy wants to go

All I can think of is to be open to other people interests and be able to find one who will at leat accept yours. I like manga&anime, dance/sing games like dance dance revolution and singstar etc. Some of my college friends look at me like I'm weird when I talk about this suff but they know I can talk aboutthings that are normal for them :P And as for fans conventions are good, I agree:)
I was fortunate enought that there was a great anime fans movement all over my country about 6 years ago (Every bigger city had its one place where all manga/anime fans gathered every 2nd sunday of the month). I met many anime fans then and they're my friends now:D I don't have so many on-line friens, though.
