Hi marshall_blake! Pascal once proposed a wager, which is recorded in his Pensees. He wrote, "You must wager. It is not optional. You are embarked. Which will you choose then?.... You must of necessity choose...Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that he is." In other words, if you wager that God is, and live accordingly, you cannot lose either way. If God is, you win all, and if God is not, you lose nothing. The opposite is also true: if you wager that God is not, and in fact God is, you lose everything and gain nothing.

Pascal's wager has one huge flaw. What if you bet on the wrong God? What if when you die, you find that the true God is Allah?. Of course there is always the off chance that most of us are wrong and God is really a tree spirit. She could be really upset with us for not making the proper sacrifices.

I did forget to ask one very important question. What kind of God is going to be impressed that you have decided to believe in him, just in case? That is about the weakest commitment to God that I can conceive of anybody making. If Pascal's wager is your sole reason reason for believing in God, I think you are probably better off not believing. I'm sure God is more impressed with an atheist who has the courage of his convictions over someone who believes just in case.

I didn't say Pascal's wager is my sole reason did I say that on my post can you please read it carefully. I just quoted Pascal's wager due to the main discussion. And if ever Pascal's wager is my sole reason doesn't all of us in one way or another wager if God exist or not.

What God is true? There is no easy answer to that question. This world is full of gods and goddesses and each of them have their adherents. It pretty much comes down to, you pay your money and you take your choice. If you ask any believer they will assure you that their God is the only one true God. There is really no logical way to choose one over the other. I don't think when you die that it will make a big difference. If there is a god, I am sure she will excuse your confusion, if you have chosen the wrong one in your life
