My whole face is numb!

I went to the dentist today to get fillings done. Of course the two fillings I needed to be done were in opposite corners of my mouth, so now pretty much my whole face is numb. Fun, fun, fun! I don't care for going to the dentist, but it's a necessity if you like to keep your choppers for as long as you can. Anyhow, he started drilling into one area that needed a filling and apparently the novacaine hadn't completely set in and I could really feel the uncomfortable pain. Why didn't I ask him to stop? Because I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. Stopping and waiting for him to shoot me up again, was not an option. So, I just grabbed the chair arms and held fast. It wasn't that bad but it was not very pleasant. The other area that needed filling was quite numb and I didn't feel a thing. So, do any of you out there like going to the dentist? As adults we don't get the cute stickers, or pencils that the kids get lol! Instead I got toothbrush, toothpaste and floss...WOOOHHHOOOO!!!! Tell me your stories about your last dentist visit or dental nightmare!

I hate going to the dentist. Anything that involves some guy being around my mouth with a needle and a bunch of scary looking tools freaks me out. The last time I was at the dentist I had to have a molar removed. So like you the whole side of my face was completely numb. It was the worst feeling in the world and something I really don't wish to go through again. But alas, I still have to have my wisdom teeth removed eventually. ARGH!!

Oh, I know how you feel! I had a couple of molars remeoved on the right bottom side of my mouth a few years ago, and they were touching the nerve and I had to sign a waiver for that which worried me that much more! I ended up being in bed a week and getting dry socket. I hate getting teeth pulled. This time, just getting fillings done was bad enough. I am glad I don't need any other work done so far lol! Thanks for sharing your story with us.

I have a dental nightmare to share. I never liked to go dentist because I am afraid of the needle and the sound of the drilling just give me the creep. But I need some filling up in two of my teeth, front and molar. When I was at the dentist, I immediately told the dentist that I didn't want any injection. The dentist forewarn me that it might uncomfortable and painful but I said I can handle it. So, the drilling started. At first I feel uncomfortable the pain. I tried to endure the pain but more and more intolerable that I had to hold the dentist to get him to stop. Finally, I agreed to an injection and surprisingly, the injection was not as painful as I imagined. Stupid me, I should have asked for the injection in the first place.

Well, if your scared of needles you probably didn't want to deal with that. The drill is much scarier to me so I just deal with the needle lol! Sometimes they can put you out so they can work without you having to be scared of having to get shots. It all depends upon the dentist I guess. That must have been pretty miserable trying to go through that without pain relief! At least you decided to try the injection and got the things done! Thanks for sharing your story.

I feel your pain...or numbness as the case may be. I had to have a couple of fillings a few years back and it was not a good experience. The dentist at first only gave me one small shot in the gums to numb me up but as soon as she took the drill to tooth I was in pain. It felt like cold water was being put on my nerve. She numbed me up some more, but I could still feel the drill near my nerve. By the time she gave me a third shot I couldn't feel my face at all. After the appointment my mom took me to get a shake, saying it would make me feel better. Instead I could barely get the drink in my mouth and it ended up all over my face. It certainly wasn't the best day I had ever had.

I can't imagine that it was a good day for you either. It's hard for the dentist to guage how much to give someone to numb them. I was tempted to get a shake today but decided against it because the last time I did, I had the same experience as you, and I couldn't even taste it to begin with! So, I skipped it lol. Oh I hate the dentist. I have cavities and needed them filled so I went to my dentist up town. Well this was the first time I had ever been to the dentist before and I was pretty scared. Keep in mind I also have panic attacks so when he stood over me and started the drilling I felt a panic attack coming on. After that visit I haven't been back and I know I need to but I just can't handle him standing over me like that. Also the drill really scares me! :)

yes this is what I will definitely have to do. I am not going back to the dentist up town though because I don't like him. Thanks for letting me know that this can be done. :)

No problem! I have a pretty decent dentist. He always asks me if I am ok and if I need to be sedated because his sign says in the front of his office "We cater to cowards" I got a good kick out of that! hahahah! Anyhow, dental work is no laughing matter and it is kinda scary, I wouldn't go back to that dentist either if you don't feel comfortable with him or like him.

Some dentists will put you in a twilight sleep to do your dental work if you get anxiety attacks like that. Maybe you should ask them to do that for any dental work, that way you can get it done and you don't have to worry about him standing over you. It is pretty scary to have someone over you with electric tools and drills and such! Thanks!

The last time I went was to get my crowns and my two worse teeth capped. That was not so bad since they had had root canals, and of course, since my husband was going to retire, we had to have all the expensive work done. He had his done the session before and of course, the dental insurance could only afford for two teeth, the other one came out of our pocket. I had to sit in that chair, waiting while he and the assistant took out one drill and then another, doing all this dentist talk, and then not only that, this was just the temporary filling and I had to wait with the warnings to "use the other side," and "don't eat anything hard." and it appeared it was that week there was a Shower and all that lovely candy that I could not eat, or at least chew. That was torture. Don't get me telling you about my root canals. That will really scare you and I do not have enough money to have dental implants.

Actually my last visit was to have a wisdom tooth pulled (still have one more to have pulled) and I came up with a neat little trick. The worst part of the dentist for me is the needle...I hate needles. So I waited till they called me back, asked to use the restroom, went in and put orajel on the gum area around the tooth he was gonna pull. I went out, he came in with that big honkin' needle and I didn't feel a thing when he stuck it in. It worked like a dream. I plan to do it everytime...much easier on me. !!HAPPY EASTER!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Haha.. I had a really embarrassing experience after having my gums numbed to have teeth extracted.. Straight after I had my teeth out I had to eat something as I was told not to eat before the extraction so I was absolutely starving. I went to my local bakery & bought a sandwich & proceeded to scoff it down as quickly as mouth could consume it.. The thing was, my mouth was still numb on one side & I was eating this sandwich on the bus with real trouble, bread, tomato and mayonnaise was falling out my mouth, I had jaw lock, my blod clots from the extraction were now full of wholemeal bread.. ewww.. & I must of gnawed half the inside of my cheek off in the process! I got some very strange looks that day I can tell you!
