Housing for the Homeless

I receive a newsletter from the city periodically. In the latest issue they were praising the opening of a new facility that will house some of the homeless people in our area. I don't have a problem with helping out the homeless, but a recent problem within my own apartment complex leads me to think this is not such a good idea. Following Hurricane Katrina many cities decided to take in more of the homeless people and place them in affordable housing. Great idea. The plan went wrong, though, when they started placing many of these people in public housing(knocking a lot of people off the waiting lists that had been there for a long time). They placed quite a few in my apartment complex. It led to chaos because the majority of these people were drug-addicted and bent on creating havoc. There were even a couple of child molesters in the bunch. It took much more time than I thought necessary, but they finally got rid of most of these troublemakers. I know it isn't true for everyone, but there is a reason many of these people are homeless. They refuse to live by the standards that society demands that they do.

I agree, most homeless people are homeless because they dont want to live by the rules of society, they dont want to have to put in the time and effort to make a decent living. I also think that there are some people who are put in unfortunate circumstances and can not help there situation. There are things we can do to help the homeless, food, clothes, even homeless shelters. However, I dont see how putting the homeless into buildings with hard working people who pay their rent is fair for others. And as you said it can cause problems for everyone.

There are always a few bad apples. We have to remember that it could happen to any of us at any time. We would not want people not too help us because others are bad apples. I would think that after being homeless for very long, you might become bitter and do things for money that you never would have before. I am sorry that you guys ended up with those bad apples, but we cannot quit trying to help people. Most are not bad.

That is very true. Many people fail to live decently becuase of the reason you just mentioned. But then there are those that just became victim of circumstances and deserved to be given help. It is just but difficult to filter these kinds of people as they are just plenty to sort out. So I guess you just have to understand that some may be bad apples and there are some that are not.
