A very nice question. And this question deserves a deep answer. It depends on the experiences of the respective individual. For me, as for my experiences go from early childhood, I have always seen my dreams destroyed. They were never fulfilled. Every time I would create a desire, or have a dream or an expectation to be fulfilled, as I would just be moving towards it, I would see it vanish. So, this repeated experience has only led me to become desireless today. And trust me, the only desire left is to be loved and love. But love is above all mortal desires. And nothing can be as good as love. Love is the best thing that anybody can share. Love is the best thing that you can give. Other desires are very temporary, and you happen to outgrow them, but love is unconditional and infinite. The more you love, the more it intensifies. There is no end to love. Love can never be complete. Love can only be unconditional and infinite. Rather than fame, glory or wealth, I would rather be loved or just love.

A very nice answer. ^__^
I know what you mean. I too often have high expectation that I always end up falling down the cliff, like a drop of brick smash on the ground. And then you just don't dare desire anything anymore. Even love, how grandeur as it is, still is difficult to reach.
But one thing I learned is, you always want things that you can't have. That's in the human's nature. And we never know how much it's worth until we lost it.

I would say love. You can be happy with love and without it the rest is not worth anything.
