Governor Spitzer (D) of New York wants to give New York State Drivers Licenses to Illegal Immigrants. The leader of the Assembly, a Republican, opposes the idea and the Governor has retaliated by cutting off all state funds to his district. Now several County exceutives are facing the same if they refuse to go alon with hte governor. It is interesting in New York that the Governor and the Majority leader of each house have almost absolute authority over the state. Now the Governor is trying to make himself the most powerful person in the state or as some might see it a dictator.
Several political leaders have expressed concern with the Governres plan to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Since this would be a state issued ID it has value and grants prividlages beyound driving. It can serve as an ID for boarding a plane. This could make the NY drivers license invalad for this purpose as it does not prove you are a citizen of the US. This would also apply for using it as one of the formes if ID when applying for a job. More important is the issuing of a drivers license gives them the right to vote in local, state and national elections, because in NY you can register by showing your drivers license. The potential is there to make it easier to obtain Government aid ans services. It also makes it easier to obtain a drivers license in another state and therefore the vote in that state.
Is this little mover meant as a way to buy the votes of the illegal immigrants and win relection and maybe iven insure the state for the Democratic candidate for president.

When I travel to South Korea to do voluenteer work for the church I have to have a sponcer and give them a departure date. Even the US Embasy warns you not to over stay your visa or try to work without the proper paper work or you could face jail time and the embasy could do little to help you. When dealing with illegals from Mexico their goverment is dong everything in their power to frustrate the little effort the US government is doing to stop the flow of illegals.

Because it opens the door for them to obtain other rights. In many states you can get a drivers license with a license from another state. With a State issued Photo ID you can register to vote, apply for government aid and many other things.
The american people have spoken on the immigration issue, twice, and this is not what they want. It is timethaat the politician listen to the people.

You have some very strange laws in America.
In any other country... being an illegal means "hiding from the law".
If your country gives a driving license to an illegal... that person cannot be considered an illegal anymore. As by giving it a license... you recognise it as a citizen of the USA.
The USA has no rights to complain about illegal immigrants. Its government does everything to welcome them. The reason for this is that America has not yet got over the slave trade. It has replaced its black slave with illegal immigrants slaves.
Governor Spitzer is nuts.

Thats what it SHOULD mean Aussie! My point exactly. Instead of hiding from the law the law is helping them out!! Thats insane!

In the county I live in, the clerks are saying they are refusing to give the license to the illegal immigrants. 3 cheers for the clerks.
Maybe this is the grass roots movement that we need.
I think what he did to the majority leader is way wrong...you can guarantee that that district will not vote for spitzer...as I will not.

Your clerks need to fall into to step with the "fearless Leadr" or face the lose of state funds.
The people of New York need to take action to remove him from office.
I have family in Upstate and they are horrified over this and agree something needs to be done.

Well I live in Prince William county Virginia which has just passed the toughest illegal immgration laws in the US. In our county the police are now allowed to require proof that an indivudual is leaglly in the country when they are pulled over. Guess what, if they are not we arelocking them up and going forward with deportation. Which, by the way, is another strain on the local tax payers.
I for one am all for anyone who wants to come to the United States and leaglly become a citizen of this country. That means learning the language. You will notice I did not say "speak" the language but learn it.
Our children are now having to progress at a slower rate in school because it is no longer required for a student in a US school to know how to SPEAK ENGLISH so more time has to be spent teaching these children who do not speak OUR language and it is holding our children back.
Another thing many people do not consider is the impact on the economy. Many of these folks send a vast majority of what they make back to their families in their homes countries. Now you many applaud them for taking care of their families and maybe it is a good thing for them but....
Local economies are dependant upon the people in the community spending the money they earn back at the local businesses. This is what keeps things flowing. When you start haveing a large majority of citizens not only taking money out of the local community but also the country, guess what it does to local business and our economy?
The ability to obtain a drivers license or even obtain assistance from our local, state and federal programs should be for US CITIZENS ONLY!!!
For the person who said we should feel for people who have to flee from their home countries because of war and maybe their family being killed or whatever, blah, blah, blah.
Stand up if you don't like what is happening in your country, state, city, community. I am so tired of the "feel sorry for me" crap. Are they going to beimprisoned or killed for standing up? Maybe but we would not have the United States Of America if it was not for people a long time ago that stood against a government and held their ground for what they believed in.
Yes many of them were killed and imprisoned but in the long run it worked did it not?

jeezu...so basically this Governor is saying "agree with me or your district and its ppl will suffer the consequences" reaaal "for the people" isnt he?
its ppl like that, that make me wonder what the point of trying to keep illegals out is! they can already get medical care, schooling, they get welfare. one of the FEW things they dont get is a vote!
how is it that this governor is being "allowed" to without funding because of this? what kind of "checks and balances" are in place for something like that?

When I first heard about this situation on the Glen Beck show I really wasn't shocked. Lately, there are several politicians who are trying to pull stunts such as this. I believe that illegal immigrants should be shipped back to their own country no matter what. If illegal immigrants truly want to become a citizen of any country then they should honor the laws of the country that they are entering. By coming into any country illegally these people are saying that the don't respect the laws of that country and that they will do whatever they please. The residents of New York should ban together to fight that Governor and tell them how they feel.

Hi Bob,
Youve really got to be kidding me? I thought the Gov of my state was out of his freakin mind for protecting "illegal" immigrants. The only thing Im happy about is knowing our state is not the only one losing their dam.n minds!
This is really outrageous. Its bad enough that we are forced to aquire Spanish as a second language so they can live here and function, allow them to ONLY work 18 months to be eligible for SS benefits when they turn 65 or giving them presidence over jobs while "natural born citizens" are unemployed.....now they are going to issue them DL's without being legal residents?????
Well WTF, forget border patrol then, there seems to be no need for it! Your absolutely right, they do seem to be giving them such presidence to gain votes, makes a lot of sense to me. They are loving all these "breaks" they are getting and will more and likely vote for the man giving it to them.
Well I will surely know who to cast my vote for, its not going to be the person who is in favor of all these "illegal" immigrant rights. Why call them Illegals then? Why bother with all the visa's and paper work? Just open up the border and let anyone in for any reason.
I just wonder how many "illegal" immigrants are here that are murderers, rapists and pedophiles that are being protected and getting all these great beneifts that natural born citizens have had to fight for?
