Do you always get a birthday present for yourself?

I do, every birthday of mine, I treat myself to something, get something I want really really bad, and something I know that no one would think of buying for me. You see, I'm not that lucky with presents, I usually get early birthday presents from my sisters throughout the year, and that's great, but on the actual birthday, well, let's just say there is just something about 17th October where everyone seems to be broke, so I never get any presents on that particular day, except the one from myself. And we all know that as we get older the presents do decrease, it is a well known fact. So last year, I got this really cool toolknife for me, which had a compass, a flashlight, and all this nifty knives and screwdrivers and even pliers all tucked up with a size of a regular tool knife, and this year, well, I got me a guitar strap, so now I can play standing up. Um... not really, that does require some practice, but since I have it now, I can definitely start practicing with it, just in case I ever play live, he he(I wish). Anyway, it's this cool black leather strap with some Japanese characters on one side of it, in bright, don't really know what it means, but it looks cool enough, and it totally goes with my acoustic, I love it. So what about you? Do you ever get presents for yourself on your birthday?

It never occured to me to get a birthday gift for myself. I have gotten a Christmas/Hanukkah gift for myself. One year I got everything on my list and I had some leftover so I got the film The Ref. It was something that I would have put on my list but it didn't make it, so I knew It was safe to get.Maybe it is because my birthday is in January, I would usually get whatever I didn't for Christmas.I know what you mean about your guitar strap. I learned the guitar on a strapless acoustic. When I finally got a acoustic with a strap, I had to re learn all the songs I had learned. Now there are some songs that I only play on my strapless and some songs I play on my guitar with a strap.I am sorry I didn't know earlier but Happy Belated Birthday.

It is not cheesy at all.I can see that you have to sit to write songs and then you can perform them standing up.But if it is a ballad or the unplugged version of a rock song, you can perform it on a stool. That's cool.

Hold everything I said about the strap and sitting and playing. I just saw a commerical about James Taylor's new cd and he was sitting on a stool playing and he was using a guitar with a strap! so practice , practice with the strap.

Thanks, yeah, you're right, it's so different playing sitting and then standing up. I still try to put both practices in, I would like to be able to do both. Of course, when I'm writing music, then that's definitely while sitting down. Plus a strap just gives a guitar a look of its own, don't you think, it's almost like a guitar looks complete and looks like a guitar that is played and loved, well, that's how it seems like to me. And you know what, a guitar that is being played is fulfilling it's destiny, I know, cheesy, right? :D

Yeah, I used to be really excited the previous years that my birthday is coming up, but now that I know nothing special happens, it's just like any other day, except on that day I'm treating myself, I know that much.

I think that its good that you treat yourself to a birthday gift since you do not get any on your actual birthday.I think you deserve to treat yourself, thats a very good idea...As far as myself i do not have to treat myself because i have 5 grown up children and they just flood me with gifts for my birthday, which is very nice. They give me gifts all year but they usually go all out for my birthday.Last year i got beautiful Roses and a gift certificate to a day at the spa, including massage, facial and the works,so i do not have to treat myself...My hubby usually takes me out to dinner at my favorite place...If i did not have my children though i would do as you do and treat myself...I have a friend that does that too....

Wow, sounds like your birthdays are awesome! That's great. In fact I think you are the first responder whose birthday isn't as miserable as the rest of us, he he.

Yes of course I do give myself birthday presents, I do recieve gifts from others but I also treat myself and buy myself that something that I like. Anyways its always soemthing and I can treat mysefl and use it as an alibi to buy what I like anyways birthdays do happen once a year and its just very normal to treat oneself we all deserve some little pleasures sometimes.

Yeah, we do deserve to be pampered sometimes even if it's by ourselves. And you're so right, it is like an alibi, if you get something really expensive and someone tells you that you spent too much money, you can always say "but it's my birthday present" and that really shuts them up, he he.

Yeah, I used to do that when I was a kid, or rather my parents would do that, get you a new outfit for your birthday, it was really nice. I don't do that anymore, but I guess it's just because I had forgotten about it. Well, there's always next year to start again.

My birthday is in early January, so as a kid there was never much money left after Christmas for my birthday. It was always a rather depressing time of year, right after the holidays, middle of winter. I don't really buy birthday gifts for myself, although as most of my family live outside of my area, and all of us being lazy, we just send each other money. So I get to buy myself something - or it goes to pay the bills. Mind you, I'm not averse to buying myself something at any time of the year.. Belated birthday wishes for last week! The guitar strap sounds cool. You're right, you'll probably need to play standing up to be in a band. Though, singer-song writers can sit down if they wish. Something to think about.

Yeah, good advice as usual, but I would like to be able to do anything with my guitar, so learning new things and new ways is always fun to go about. Plus it just looks so much cooler playing it standing.

I have never expected anyone to get my a gift on my birthday, even when I was a kid...the reason behind that though was my father said I never deserved anything so why should I get anything...and after a while you believe what is said. the other way to look at that is if you expect nothing and get something you have a bonus. I do buy myself a birthday present (get myself a Christmas present too for the same reason) every year and I also go out for a meal, doesn't matter if with friends/family or by myself. As for what I get...usually it is a CD or DVD boxset that would usually be out of my usual price range (the joy of savings!) or maybe something new for my PC.

Yeah, you're right, it doesn't really matter what the present is, the important thing is to realize that you deserve a present, even if it's only from yourself.

oh, first of all, happy birthday in advance, because by that time, I'll probably forget it's your birthday, and I guess in the end it's all about treating yourself on your special day, whether that means getting yourself a present or getting drunk, ha ha.

Of late I started getting presents for my own self. It will either be an article, or some thing which I like, for ex. going out any where, watching movie at home or going to sister's house, wherein I enjoy in my innerself, for my own. So this way it is special for me.

Yes I do. My husband usually gives me money as part of my birthday pressie from him so I use that to buy me something nice, usually clothes or shoes or even spoil myself with a manicure and pedicure or get my hair done.

I got a few this year, but like you, I don't usually get very many. So, I too will splurge on myself a little more than usual. It is very important to feel good enough about yourself to treat you.

Nope. Honestly, I didnt buy any present for myself during my birthday. It's my husband who does the preparation of the presents for my birthday. As I remember I havent had the chance to buy any present for myself even when I am still single. I always buy anything for myself when I want something but not on my birthday. I love my presents every birthday of mine but not me will do for that. I want my husband to do that for me.lol! Maybe I cant think of buying something for myself during my birthday and I want others to do it for me.lol!
