Sometimes It Pays To Go Through The Garbage!

I heard about this story on the news last night, of a woman, Elizabeth Gibson, who lives here in NYC, who on a March morning four years ago, was walking along the street, and spotted this large abstract painting that had been tossed out and was in the garbage--she was attracted to it, and decided to help herself to it, since it was simply considered "garbage"
Here's an excerpt from the NY Times article about it all:
(quote)
..."As it turns out, the painting was “Three People,” a 1970 canvas by the celebrated 20th-century Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo that was stolen 20 years ago and is the subject of an F.B.I. investigation.
Experts say the painting — a largely abstract depiction of a man, a woman and an androgynous figure in vibrant purples, oranges and yellows — is in miraculously good condition and worth about $1 million. On Nov. 20 it is to go on the block at Sotheby’s as one of the highlights of a Latin American art auction.
Ms. Gibson said she did not suspect that the painting had any commercial value when she found it. “I am not a modern-art aficionado,” she said. “It was so overpowering, yet it had a cheap frame.”
The painting had been missing for so long that the owners, a married couple whom Sotheby’s would not identify, had long since given up hope of ever seeing it again. The husband, a Houston collector and businessman, had purchased “Three People” at a Sotheby’s auction in 1977 as a birthday present for his wife. He paid $55,000 for it.
Ten years later, when the couple were in the midst of moving from a house to an apartment in Houston, they put the painting into storage at a local warehouse. It was there that it disappeared.
The couple reported the theft to the local and federal authorities, and an image was posted on the databases of the International Foundation for Art Research and the Art Loss Register. They also offered a $15,000 reward to anyone who could help them recover it. But no credible leads surfaced.
The couple later moved to South America, and the husband died. It is his widow who is putting the painting on the market.
How “Three People” got from a Houston warehouse 20 years ago to the streets of New York remains a mystery. The painting’s disappearance so troubled August Uribe, an expert at Sotheby’s, that he volunteered to appear on “Antiques Roadshow” in a “Missing Masterpieces” segment in May 2005.
Ms. Gibson had hung the painting in her living room, but remained curious about it. She had gone back to the Alexandria the day after taking it home and asked the doormen there if anyone could tell her who had put it on the street.
It took three years for her to realize that she possessed a stolen painting.
A few months after she hung it in her apartment, she said, she called a friend who had worked at an auction house and described the painting to him. “He asked me if it had a signature,” she recalled. It did. In the upper right-hand corner the artist had signed it “Tamayo 0-70.”
A year or so after that, she said, she told another friend about the painting. “He showed me a Sotheby’s catalog where a Tamayo had sold for $500,000,” she recalled. ..."
Well, it turns out that this particular painting is now worth ONE MILLION dollars...She was able to to contact the original owner who will pay the original offer of the $15,000 for the painting, but now since it is officially up for auction at Sotheby's she will get a percentage of the auction sale price.
Not bad for finding something in the garbage...right? So like maybe we should hunt people's garbage from now on...LOL
I used to have a friend that would go through the garbage on the streets at the most expensive neighborhoods in Manhattan, like the block where the famous Dakota apartment is where John Lennon had lived...he said you couldn't believe the great stuff people were junking as garbage, including rare books

That's some story, pyewacket, and it proves that one man's junk is indeed another man's treasure, lol. It also proves that when you find something that is pleasing to the eyes that is a good sign that you should keep it. I have seen this woman's story before, and she had an incredible stroke of luck when she found that painting. The story has also resurrected my interest in a couple of paintings that I acquired many years ago. I think they are extraordinarily beautiful and have always been curious about them. Once I had resolved to try and find out something about their origin, but other matters got in my way. I have the time now to do some research and I think I will do just that.

I have two paintings myself that used to belong to my great-grandmother...one is a small oil painting that I swear looks from the time of the Northern Renaissance painter time and another in the style of Baroque paintings...whether they are real or just copies would love to find out..I might be sitting on a fortune myself and not know it!

Oh--as an addition...this story was told to me by my grandmother and mother...my great-grandmother was in the habit of bartering...so one day, she asked a neighbor to move furniture for her...she didn't have any money to give the person, but said, as in for payment, that he could take any piece of furniture or painting he wanted...he picked out a painting...It just happen to be a genuine painting by the impressionistic painter Turner...OUCH!!! :(

Wow, good story. I rented a booth in a flea market awhile back and one of the other renters only sold items she found on the side of the road or that people gave to her, and she was making about $500.00 a week. She would find sofa, tables etc and resell them.

What a great story! She was really lucky to have stumbled upon the painting. I do notice people put out some good looking stuff in the trash. I have put stuff out myself in the past that I haven't wanted anymore.

Wow! That's quite a find, and in the trash, to boot. It almost makes me feel like checking out the curbs, on trash day. lol Ok, I'd be too embarassed to do that, but it is a tempting thought. Maybe I could dress like a hobo, and give it a try someday. lol With my luck, I'd just find some trash.

WOW! That's really something amazing!
It's really neat for that woman and the original owner as well.
Too bad though after all this time she doesn't want to keep it.
I think I would. Especially after my hubby had passed and he gave it too me.
I never would have thought rich people would throw away rare books!! I think it would be an awesome thing to be able to collect rare books. That'd be a thing I think I'd do if I was rich.

Wow, that's a wonderful story. I'm glad to haear there are still treasures in the trash. Eli Wildner, the frame expert, graduated from Yale about the time the Met was getting rid of the ornate old frames (Thought it detracted from the art) and he trash picked all the old gilt frames. Now they are worth a fortune and he's the leading expert on antique picture frames....When I was young and living in Phila., every Thurs was trash night in center city and EVERY body went out and picked. It was like a Thursday night social. People would bring food & drink and share along the way. It was like a big old center city block party and we furnished a lot of our apartments that way.

I had heard of this story on the news recently. I guess we'd be surprised as to what rich people throw away, things that they can buy anytime and we'd consider luxuries. I would not mind going through throw aways, to me it's much like going to rummage sales, or digging through a box at the thrift store. One man's trash IS another man's treasure. I would have thought that since the painting was stolen, that the original owner would have had first option as to the painting. Maybe paying the finder a reward for finding it and returning it. But that's a bonus that she is getting some of the auction money too.

Hi pyewacket! Wow, that is awesome! Now I believe in the saying, one man's garbage is another man's wealth. Lol! That lady is very lucky indeed. I have heard similar stories like that before and it just makes me really go out and look inside other people's garbage especially those of the wealthy. haha..Take care and have a nice day.

Wow! What an incredible story! God was looking out for that woman! I've heard of a similar story about a man who went to a salvation army store and found an old map, I can't remember exactly what kind of map but it turned out to be worth a lot of money. Kind of makes a person wonder how things get to where they are when they're found. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I guess a lot of people just throw things out or give them away without knowing their real worth, right?

Oh definitely Pye, may be worth going back to the rich neighborhoods to check the trash, or what they call trash! I prefer my garage sales, yard sales to be in the upper scale neighborhoods, they get rid of stuff you wouldn't believe, and for next to nothing prices! I just love it!!
