Peanut-free classrooms? Peanut-free schools?

Some children have life-threatening peanut allergies. In order to remain safe they must not breathe, touch, or taste peanuts. How would you feel if you were asked to avoid packing peanut products when sending snacks and lunch for your child to school?

I wouldn't have a problem with at all. A friend of mine has a sister who is severely allergic to peanuts. We were supposed to meet at another mom's house for a little get together with her as ...she had just had a baby and hadn't been out much in a while becase she also spent a significant amount of her pregnancy on bedrest. Anyway, the hostess didn't know she was allergic to peanuts and had a dish of them out before she arrived. The poor girl ended up not being able to stay at her own party for fear of a reaction. She had had 3 serious accidental reactions in the prior two years and her doctor had warned her that another one in such a short amount of time could kill her.
I know that peanut allergies are serious and I would be more than willing to go out of my way to protect my child's classmates. I wish more schools would take this initiative.

How scary for your friend's sister! I'm lucky to not be dealing with anything at that level of severity.

Proper knowledge of our child's health is good for parents so that proper nutrients be given to the children. Children must also know on what food they should not eat because of their allergies. This is a parent-child concern so that problems in the future regarding health matters must be avoided.

I understand that you are saying that children should be taught to refuse foods that are dangerous to them. But what about kids who are too young to be reliable about this. In my experience, a four-year-old might "get it," but he's going to eat what a teacher or parent gives him. Also, what about children who are so allergic that they can't be near peanut products?

If I knew the reason for it I wouldn't have a problem with it whatsoever! Everyone has the right to go to school and not have to worry about getting deathly ill from going because of the fear there is a peanut or the threat of it in the vicinity. My friends son is deathly allergic to peanut products. Her husband had eaten a peanut butter sandwich and without realizing it he kissed his son on the cheek. They were in the emergency room within an hour, his whole face had swollen up and broken out into hives. It's amazing.

Glad to hear that you believe that everyone has the right to go to school! Some of the moms in my "food allergic" email group have had parents tell them that they need to homeschool their kid!!!!!
It's frightening when they are so allergic to something, like your friend's son is. Really scary stuff.
