"It is not what you don't know that keeps you from being successful, but what you do know that is not true that keeps you from being successful."
I read this the other day and it hit me, that is so true to me. What do you think? is this a ring of truth in this quote for you, please let me know! what do you think?

very true, but it get's even deeper then that. i know for us as black people we hear a lot of what we call old wives tales that we take into adulthood that just are not so but we hold on to them like they are the most right thing ever. like being big bone. so far from the truth

To this day, I am still hearing black men say that the "white man" is holding them down and that is such a crock of bull. But, they really believe that. It is very sad when a mentality passes from generation to generation and every generation continues to accept it as true whether it is or not.

I think thats true, In order to do things and be successful at it you need to know the truth. You need to know how to do something the right way in order to succeed. Some people might tell you how to do something the wrong way so you will fail and they might be able to do good at is. You have to be carefull what you believe in.

hmm... this one is really profound.
I get the first part of the quote... that it is not what you don't know that keeps you from being successful.
That part is easy.
It is the second part that I am puzzled.
How does things that I know that are not true be keeping me from being successful?
If I know they are not true, can I not be able to get the facts from the nonesense separated such that I know what to do to get successful?
Please enlighten.

well what i mean by that is things we say all the time that we hear and repeat that are not true. like over weight people are greedy, or men are no good, or all woman want men for there money. now we know that not all people who are over weight greedy, we know that not all men are dogs. but we are so conditioned to say certain things that they begin to be the things that we experince. so they may not be true, but by saying them over and over they become false truths

So with these false truths that we believe, we end up not being successful due to the false truths?
hmm... thanks for clearing that up. Now that I understand the quote a little better, I think it does ring true to some extend.
To say if this quote is true or not will highly depend on the individual.
For a person with strong character, he will not be easily swayed by half truths. He will find the truth to things that he believes and not be easily swayed by what people are saying.
For a person who has no mind of his own, then he will believe every half truth there is out there, hence preventing him from succeeding.
So it really depends.
I think it is more of the "things that we do not know we don't know" that is preventing us from moving forward.

well that goes without saying. i am talking more on a false truths. things that we believe to be true that just might not be the case. i know one of my friends love to say men are just no good, they are all dogs. then she wonders why she wakes up with fleas. if you think all men are no good then you find no good men. so then it becomes a false truth. because not all men are dogs. you see what i mean?
