Filipinos: Are we too forgiving?

Imelda Marcos, former First Lady who along with her husband turned the Philippines into the sick man of Asia, is presently living a free life, enjoying her wealth. Her children hold positions in government.
Joseph Estrada, convicted of plunder, is now a free man, free to run after the people who testified against him like Chavit Singson and Clarissa Ocampo. His sons hold positions in government.
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, under whose term thousands of people have been executed or disappeared, and who has been suspiciously involved in electoral fraud, graft and corruption, is still the sitting president.
What the heck is going on?
Personally I am not in favor of granting pardon to Estrada. I think commutation would have been more appropriate, which means reducing his sentence instead of setting him free.
What about you? What do you think?

What i know is Gloria Macapagal arroyo just use Joseph estrada, so she can hide all her scandal, and putting estrada in a pardon by her, but she still stool the place of presidencial and lie to the people, she easly kick estrada in malacanang & whay nobody can give her inpeachment because she will kill the people who dis-agree to her stupid goverment. i dont know what happen already to this country, im filipino but i really hate to go back home, because of the goverment working abroad is to help our country to go up, but they kill all the OFW, specially know the manoey is become nothing at all. we cannot call the we are too forgiving.

GMA has killed thousands of activists, but I haven't heard about killing OFWs. Maybe you would like to explain that further.

i think it's not about being forgiving. it is something like we are never learning from the past. we keep on electing and letting shrewd people to lead us. marcos was able to rule our country for 20 years. millions of voters elected estrada overwhelmingly over other qualified candidates as president. and now, GMA is acting as president when majority of Filipinos see her as illegitimate and therefore should step down. so mistakes after mistakes, scandals after scandals, GMA committed another sin to the Filipinos by pardoning estrada who was recently convicted of plunder.
why is this happening? i think it is happening because we are letting things to happen. people are now tired and powerless amidst the sense of despair and discontent in the government. i have joined rallies and i will never hesitate to join more. i think we should let our leaders know that we are not happy with the way we are being governed. keep the faith filipinos. many people before us have already sacrificed and done heroic things for us. let's not fail them.

I can't wait for GMA to get out in 2010. She's going down in history as one of the most hated presidents of our country.

Just face and accept that you are like everyone else. No different. I have Filipino cousins who believe that they are so special because of who they are, but they are no different for the rest of us. Just be you.

To add on to what I said, I am just saying that your government is just like other governments out there, and instead of complaining, do something. If you hate what is going on then do not complain about it, change it! Maybe you all need a stronger democracy?

I agree that action is more important than words. Our democracy is indeed young, just a little over 100 years old, compared to that of the United States which is over 230 years old. So we do have a long way to go.

Who committed worse? Is it not grabbing the Presidency? Like Cory Aquino and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo? They destroyed the Philippines. And they have not shown better but worse.

Cory Aquino may not have been the smartest president, but she restored democracy and human rights.
And she didn't grab the presidency. She was elected by the people in the snap election, but was cheated by Marcos.

let us face it..what are you going to a bunch of people who looted the money from the poor? the "love" of money got these people off without much ado...look at Marcos..he was exiled to the US and lived his days out in paradise island..the most expensive state in the US..even I don't go there as I would rather go to the Philippines as it is cheaper..now my wife is from the Philippines and wants us to go to Hawaaii? what for? its warm and not as hot as the Philippines but the Philippines is where she grew up..and she always gets sick when she goes to the Philippines and we own a home in Negros where we can stay for free...but no she wants to to without me..and that is because I am a German American and she says I don't fit in with her relatives...and she feels uncomfortable when I am there as she thinks I will get kidnapped..or something...probably she has her reasons...but she always gets a bad cough..even in Negros where the air is clean..go figure
but saying that..my asawa would never forgive infidelity...but if you have enough money..why can my brother in laws have a mistress and i can't? i think she is not going to even entertain that idea for her asawa even though her brothers can...is that fair? Let Marcos have there billions of dollars in gold..who is going to stop them as the rest of the people in government are all the same..even our President Nixon got off..cause' Ford gave him a pardon..How can you pardon someone when they never had a trial? All Bill Clinton did was something all guys would do if they got the chance..was this reason to say he did crime of high treason? that is so silly...The rich never will have to account for their sins on earth...methinks the rich are different...F.Scott Fitzgerald...the great gatsby

I agree with you that if you're living in the USA and you have a chance to take a vacation, it is better to go to the Philippines than in Hawaii. Try Palawan and you'll see what I'm talking about.
