Can't Put Book Down

I started reading a book yesterday that I had been eagerly looking forward to reading. It is in the category of a series that I started reading a few years ago. My problem is that with some books I become so engrossed that it is very hard to put the book down. I ended up reading until morning(which totally ruined my day). It's like I keep telling myself that I will just finish this chapter and then I will stop. But everyone knows that a truly good author has the ability to carry you from one chapter smoothly into the next, lol. I finally decided to stop in the middle of the next chapter and that did the trick. Does this ever happen to you?

I think that is the sign of an avid reader. We've all done it at one time or another. Since having kids that hasn't happened to me as much as it did in my younger years. Something about actually having to be up and alive for my kids in the morning reminds me that I HAVE to put a book down and come back to it later.

Well, blueunicorn, I've done my time with raising kids-and grandkids, lol, so now my time is my own. If I want to stay up reading all night, I feel like I've paid my dues.(:

I'm also a big fan of Iris Johansen, Shaun. I just got her new book, Pandora's Daughter, and I can't wait to start reading it. The Face of Deception was very engrossing.

LOL I"M like that too. Ever since I was a kid.
If I'm really enjoying the book it's very difficult for me to put it down before reaching the end.
Actually you can even talk to me and I won't even hear you.
Now I have more responsibilities than I had when I was younger so I need to force myself to stop but often still read a book trough the night.

That's one of the reasons I love retirement so much, arkaf, I can pretty much live my life as haphazardly as I wish, lol. I do devote myself to getting my proper rest most of the time, however.(:

I have the same thing. Sometimes I read until the wee hours of the morning. Then I am tired all the rest of the day. But it is so hard to stop. I have to have my husband come and take my books away from me. We have a deal, if I am still reading at 2am, he takes my book away and turns the lights off. This way I get at least 5 hours of sleep. Otherwise, I may read until the sun comes up and then I am in REAL trouble.

You and your husband have a very good arrangement, vokey. He is concerned about you getting your proper rest, and that is sweet.(:

I'm reading a new Terry Pratchett book I bought and he is very good at making you not want to stop at the end of a chapter. I read in bed mainly too so I would end up reading all night if I didn't stop, I just have to force myself. he has a way of making the end of the last chapter so good you want to read the next one straight away like in soap opera's when they use cliff hangers.

I have read something by Terry Pratchett, nancyrowina, but the title slips my mind now. I do try to read a wide variety of authors, but I never like to miss a new book by one of my favorites.

ALL THE TIME!!! I love a great book, but it's hard to get any sleep when you're in the midst of one. I'm reading a book now and I end up falling asleep with the book in my hand - only because I'm tired, not because it's boring!!! Instead of reading for a half hour before bed, I'm reading for AT LEAST an hour, usually longer. It's really hard to get enough sleep this way :)

I have also fallen asleep with a book in my hand a few times, reinydawn, so you're not alone there. I'm going to have to pace myself from now on.

I almost missed a plane a couple of years ago because I finished the first book of a series a couple of hours before leaving to board the plane. It was so good I had to stop at the bookstore to get the second in the series so I could read it on the plane.

I know that feeling very well, cajundharma! I will even take a book along to my doctor's appointment.

I seem to have that problem, also. I have read into the wee morning hours to finish a book myself. If books could be an addiction then I would need an intervention. I am always reading something. And with really good books, I find myself putting off other things that need to be done in order to finish reading it.

If it is an addiction, Aurone, I can't think of a nicer one. Everyone needs something to feel passionate about, and with me it is books.

Oh, yes worldwise I've done that..and of course hated myself for doing it...I've learned to set a limit now...The last time I was so engrossed in a book and couldn't put it down, and doing that mind game of saying, oh, just one more chapter, ...one more page...was The DaVinci Code--don't ask what time I finally went to bed, but that was the quickest I ever read a book!

Oh, yes, pyewacket, I can agree on that! Sometimes I think I'm actually greedy when it comes to books, lol. I've been known to pick up a book in the morning and have it finished by the next morning. You are right about pacing ourselves. I must keep reminding myself that I need to let the suspense build a little. I am just beginning a new book today and I'm going to allow myself no more than 50 pages per day.

I really admire those writers who has the ability to captivate their readers when reading their work. My mom always gets angry at me whenever I stayed up late reading a novel that I really, really like to finish. There are times when I felt that the events happening in the book is also happening to me and that makes me want to end the book as soon as possible because it will give me a heavy feeling as if my day is not perfect.

Yes, cherryblossm, I do love an author who has the ability to place you right inside the action! I also like the ones that leave you wondering what happens after the story is finished.

Hi worldwise,
It must be a going thing!! I have the same problem. I get so engrossed in a book that when I realize the time, it is too late to do what I needed to do. So then I continue reading trying to finish the book so I can get my life back. LOL
Once I get into a good book, nothing else matters.
Happy posting..

This frequently happens to me when I am reading a book in a series, laurentyu. The characters are familiar, and you just want to know what is going to happen next with them.

I've found, jts, that we like what we like. There is no reason to apologize for liking Harry Potter. I really like him too.

OH YES!! I always have had this problem. From the very beginning of being able to read, I would get so caught up in my books that I would stay up all night to read. Sometimes, I would eat meals and read, carry books with me everywhere I went just in case I found myself with a few minutes of free time. I have been known to read at really long traffic lights. So yes, it is a common problem, but one I am willing to deal with LOL

It happens to me all the time and I can't put a book down till I've finished reading it. Nothing works. I can't stop in the middle of a chapter. I don't stop till I have to do some urgent work! Sometimes, I can't even keep a magazine down till I finish reading it!

I fall asleep when I read. The most I can manage is a few pages. Some books are easier to read than others.
When they were much younger, both my girls would stay awake all night till they finished a book...with no ill effects at school next day. I have never been able to do that....lol.

Yes, I have begun reading a book and then became so totally engrossed in the story that I just could not find a place to stop and put it down. Or I would put it down only to rush around and get back to reading it. I love it when that happens, but then I'm saddened when I am finished with it.

Hello!
Does this ever happen to me? Always! *wehehe*
Everytime i'm reading a good book I don't want to put it down. I won't even bother to eat or do anything, all I want to do is finish the book and know the ending of the story. I hate it coz when I put the book down i'll keep on thinking about it, wondering what's the next thing to happen or even dream about it. LOL!! when its weekend i'll read til I can't keep my eyes open any longer...LOL!!
Ohh..those good authors must had put some magic dust in the book pages...you just can't stop reading it..LOL!
ciao! c",)
