How long can you work in the dark before you get eye-strain or eye-pain?

Most times I can only work on the computer in the dark for just a few minutes before my eyes start to hurt. And, then if I keep going, I get a horrible migraine headache.
Years ago, I could work in the dark with no problems. Not anymore. Maybe it's just a result of getting older or bad eye sight. Or, maybe all that working in the dark damaged my eyes and so I can't do it anymore.
How about you? How long can you work in the dark on your computer before you get eye pain? Do you think it's wise to work in the dark? Can it really damage your eyes? Or, is that a myth?

Usually I dont get eye strain. I can work on the computer in the dark for a long while. It dosent bother me. I have heard its very bad for your eyes though. You should always have atleast a small light on.

Hello there. I can never work in the dark (not even for one second). I only use my laptop when the lights are on. I cannot watch television shows with the lights off too (except for cinemas because there's no choice). I can feel my eyes strained whenever I try to work in the dark. It's definitely not a myth. Our eyes are very fragile and we should take good care of it.

work in the dark isn't a good custom, the strong light will harm your eyes,in my school times,i always watch tv in dark, and now i became a short sight.so now i will turn on the light when i work on the computer!

its really hard working late night in front of the computer. I usually rest for some while if my eye strains and then work again....

I often work in the dark on my computer. It doesn't really bother me except for the fact that sometimes if I need to look at the keyboard I feel I need some light LOL
Regardless I do think that it's not the best thing for the eyes and lately I decided to have a small - not too bright - light. At first I didn't really find much of a difference but with time I realized it made it a bit easier on my eyes.

Morning beautyqueen. I have the same case with yours. I cannot work for a few minutes before I get migraine headache and eye pain. Each time when I use the computer in the room, I have to turn on the light, otherwise eye pain will reach me soon. But it is ok to my wise. She doesn't have such a problem at all.
Well, to answer the last three questions, I don't think it wise to work in the dark because it really damages our eyes. It is not a myth, but a fact. Thank you for your topic, dear friend. Have a good day.

I never have the lights off when I'm on my pc and don't think I could do it for very long if I did. I don't believe it's a myth because my optometrist (sp?) mentioned it to me on my last visit.

I can actually work for more than 5 hours on the computer in the dark (I always do it during the night) except my eyes begin to hurt if I look away from the screen afterwards. I don't think it is wise to work in the dark since you are just putting strain on your eyes, it could be a myth that you damage your eyes but it doesn't change the fact that your eyes hurt in the end.

Not for very long as my eyes start to hurt from straining too much. I have to have a light on whenever I am on the computer and or watching tv. I cannot watch tv in the dark - I use to years ago but not anymore.

As soon as it starts getting dark I need to put the light on if I am on the computer but I think it is that the screen is so bright on some pages that the difference is difficult to deal with. I prefer pages without too much white background so MyLot is not ideal.

It's not the dark that gets me. It's the light actually. So I can rock the dark with only the computer screen light or something.
I actually have problems at my job because they recently replaced the lights and they are super bright. I can't even look straight forward when I'm walking because the lights are just so bright. So I can work in the dark a lot better than working in the light actually.

So funny, I read the title of your discussion and I realized it had gotten pretty dim since I had first sat down at the computer and my eyes were a bit sore. I guess you saved me some eye strain because now I have a light on. I can probably work for about half an hour or so before I notice that my eyes are starting to bother me and I have to turn on a light.
