Okay when most tyhink of fall they think of the lovely varied colors of the various tree leafs. Some are amazingly beautiful. Now I also think of cattails in the fall. They don't have a beautiful color or hue to them. But they lose that brown corndog appearing "leaf". It turns into a cotton appearing blob blowing away with the wind. I love thre appearance of a field of cattails in the fall. They grow in small ponds, irrigation ditches and many varied small bodies/areas of water here in Minnesota. Do you have cattails in your area? Did you ever pick some and place in a vase with other local plants for a centerp[iece? It can be beautiful if adding the correct local grasses etc in the vase.

I gather you don't have a photo here of cattails? I have heard of them, but am not exactly sure what they look like?
Are they native to the US?

Yup. Theres 2 photos here. HAHAHA! When they are full grown
they can reach up to heights of 4 feet tall. The brown part
is usually about 6 to 12 inches in length. They are beautiful.
I know they are also found in Canada but don't know where else
they are. Maybe we'll get an answer here. HAHAHA!

Good grief. You do have a photo. These cattails are so soft & pretty. How big do they get? I commented on the lovely photo.

My mom when I was littlwe would dip them in varnish or shellack I believe to preserve them for looks as a dried type of decoration.

we do have them here by the reservoir-but i've been told it's now illegal to pick them :(
i guess too many were doing it.but i used to bring them home and arrange them for my grandmother as she was too frail to get them herself.she seems to enjoy it:)
we had something else growing there we called blacktails-they'd last about a week, then dry out and drop all over the place.made me sneeze horribly!

They aren't illegal to pick here. We do have some native Minnesotan wild grasses that are illegal to pick so as to preserve the plant.

Frankly speaking Grandpa Bob, in Malaysia I don't think so that we have cattail plant. OR it might be with different name.
But I have seen some menu at international hotel in Kuala Lumpur where they serve for Cattail Fried Rice, Pasta with Cat's Tail and Raw Cattail Soup. But where they got all this stuff.
Thanks for your good discussion, at least my working brain will look for Cattail plant in the local market(if any). Previously I'm not serious to look for this stuff, now I will start my search especially for medical reason.

I've never heard of "cattail soup" till now. This is a photo
of what they look like in the summertime when they are blooming.
The brown area is very soft to the touch. Then they turn into a
fuzz ball like the original photo.

I love fall! The falling leaves, the coolness in temperature. The leaves are amazing, the colors are fantastic. I collect falling leaves and use them as bookmarks. leaves are really useful. I always watch the leaves as they fall in the ground.

I haven't seen a cat tail in years! That brings back some memories. We had a pond that was surrounded by them and my dad used to take me and my brother fishing and that is one of those things that stand out in my mind were those big cat tails. The fishing trips ended when my brother tried to cast his line and got a three prong hook stuck in the back of his head, that ninny!

I never noticed any cattails here...mmm...wonder why they call them that.....I used to go to this park all the time, and never had cattails but did have marshy grasses in the pond that of course changed color during the fall...I took this photo years ago..I took it near sunset giving the scene an extra warm glow to it--Some of the florists near me will sell cattails occasionally and stalks of wheat to symbolize the fall/Thanksgiving season

that's a really lovely photo of a cattail. I've seen cattails here, and also in flower arrangements. But not in the full ripeness of your photo.
The fluffy bits are nature's way of dispersing and reproducing cattails I suppose. Wind dispersion I seem to recall from a science textbook years ago.
Over here, people like to take wedding photos in fields of cattails. Something earthy and romantic about it.

we don't have that fall colors. i just saw them in pictures and on tv. i really admire the colors that i see on thsoe trees. in south korea too and in japan where they have snow too they have some fall colors in their threes. in my country we have different kind of trees. we don't have maple trees that have different colors. those colors are changing from one color to another. it is really awesome and sometimes that i wish that we will get to see that sight in our place too and i really want to enjoy nature wonders too someday. i will haev to go in atnoher country too in order to see those changing colors too. i have seen some articles about some place in america that has that beautiful colors in a mountain. there are some trees that have some beautiful colors of leaves too. but they are not really common in our city. there are only few trees in our city. hope that we will be able to see those things too.
i just can't believe sometimes that those trees could really display such beauty in our world that they are able to transform one place into one place of paradise for a time. even in our rural place where there are lots of trees and plants, we rarely see those bautiful trees. mostly trees here don't have that beautiful leaves and flower. and there are some place though here that are known to have a beuatiful trees. but i have not really been there, i wish i will be able to visit some beautiful parts of our coutnry to have some nature tripping. and i have been to one country that have lots of beautiful trees but their trees have only green leaves and don't have different colors like you have in your fall? hope that i will be able to see them in our country too. i really don't know if your kind of trees will be able to thrive in our environment.

I love cat tails. They look so beautiful and I arrange them in a vase that is on the floor. They stand tall and give an air of importance to the room.
