Why are we being taxed for spending money that we already pay income taxes on and should we do away with sales taxes?

I do not think that any Government will stop sales tax, unless of course they introduce another sort. In Australia we have GST (Goods & Services Tax) which is set at 10% whereas under the old sales tax system the amount could vary considerably and some taxes were very high. Despite the fact that there was great controversy when it was introduced I believe it is better than the old system we had previously.
We do not pay GST on fresh fruit, vegetables, meat and non-processed foods, although we do pay it on things like fast foods or take away foods already prepared.
I believe that if we want to maintain the current standard of living we already enjoy, then we must pay these taxes. Our taxes pay for schools, hospitals, roads and so many other things and by having some sort of tax in addition to income tax everyone pays and not just those who earn an income. For example, in Australia people who are on unemployment benefits or a pension in general do not get enough to pay income tax but they still contribute through the GST. :)
