Im doing a night class in photography and im really struggling to pick up the aperture and shutter speed parts of it!
If anyone can give me a really basic description/definition I would really appreciate it!
Thanks

I'm not sure what is giving you difficulty, so I'll just start with some basics.
When thinking about the shutter speed, remember that they number on you camera is a shortened version of the real number. If you are shooting at "120", you are really shooting at 1/120. That fraction is the part of a second that the shutter is open. So, 120 is really 1/120 of a second. So, the "higher" the number, the quicker the shutter opens and closed, exposing the sensor/film.
When looking at aperture, the number is a relationship of the opening of the shutter. The smaller the number, the larger the opening. So, f4 is open wider than f22.
Aperture works in conjunction with shutter speed to determine how much light is reaching your sensor/film. Your aperture opening will determine how long the shutter must be open to get the right exposure. If you shoot at f22 for 1/120, you will get less light to the sensor/film than if you shoot f4 for 1/120.
Aperture can also affect your depth of field, how much of the photo is in focus. The smaller the opening, larger the number, the more that will be in focus because the shutter will have to be open longer. The larger the opening, the smaller the number, the shorter the shutter will be open, so less will be in focus.
I hope this helps.
