I have a passion for reading and writing. I find characters in my everyday life and pour them all into short stories. I have finally finished one that i believe to be my greatest accomplishment yet. Only one problem. I have no idea how to get it published. I dont even know where to begin. Any suggestions??

In previous days normally a writer has to hire literary agent or submit your manuscript to book publisher. But most of your hard work rejected and you will be very upset.
So you better learn how to be SELF PUBLISHING. I hope my small help will solve your problem through this web link;

I would still recommend going the agent route first though. It is worth a try. Self-publishing can be a pain. You shoulder all the costs and burden of promoting your work. Isn't it better to at least try to have someone pay you for your book instead? Look at a website called Predators & Editors, it will give you good advice on which companies and agencies to approach with your book.

Congratulation Chrys. Nice to learn that you have passion for reading and writing. Both of reading and writing habit or hobbies are becoming rare. So you are a rare person. You found characters in daily life and you are writing them in to short stories. You want to publish those short stories in form of a book. I will suggest you should try to publish your short stories in to a popular magazine first. This will help to make you popular. You would be listed as a popular short stories writer. After then you would be able to approach some publisher of good prestige, who will take your short stories and would write an agreement deed depending on copy right act and will proceed to publish your short stories on cost of the deed, or agreement you and publisher signed for.
It is very hard and risky job to publish a book by author, especially in my country Pakistan. Poets and story writers are miserable here in my country. They publish there work spending lot of money and out of their own pocket. But they could not sell it, as there are nor readers of books are available here. They publish one thousand or five hundred copies and after then they start to divide it freely among so called book lovers.
This is age of information technology. This is age of audio and visual revolution. People have no time to read a book. You should arrange to publish very less number of books, so as you should establish yourself as an electronic media writer.
Wish you best of luck Chrys.

Publishers and editors will not look at unsolicited manuscripts. They will only look at work being pitched to them by agents. Your first step would be to an agent. You would go directly to the publisher if it is non-fiction.
Self-publishing is another route but costs money. POD is a little better if you get the right company. Print On Demand charges you as you sell your books. They even help with marketing, though they are limited I believe to smaller books stores rather than chain stores.
Our writing group has decided to publish an anthology of short stories and poems. One of our members has been published by a POD publisher and says he is willing to help us get published by them. Once we have an "in" with that company, then hopefully our own individual works will come naturally.
If you want an agent (who does all the leg work) it is good to know someone. I have a non-blood relative who is a published author and has given me the name of her agent and said I could use her name. I have to get to him before she is no longer with him (not that that is going to happen but one never knows, do one?).
Good luck!

Yes I think self publishing is a great idea for you. But if you believe in your story why not research a few top publishing companies and send your short story to them. If they like it maybe they will get you stretch it to a short story book and or suggest you write some more short stories to be published into a book of short stories. Decide which way you want to go and then go for it.

For years, I wrote shorts stories as well. Most times when I wanted to locate a potential publisher, I would consult "The Writer's Digest". It's the definitive book for writers who want to get their work published. There is also a handbook by the same company for anyone seeking to publish a screen play.
Both books provide valuable insight into the writing and publishing world as well as extensive listings on publishers and their publication requirements. If you cannot afford the $30-$40 price tag for each book, you can pick one up free at your local library (depending on your location). Or, check Ebay for a used copy of the book. Best of luck!
