I have had this fortune plant for about 12 years now, and for the last 6 or 7 years, it would produce a flower stalk about every one and half years or so. When I entered the house last night, there was this very strong fragrant smell. I went to the breakfast room and lo and behold! my fortune plant is blooming and fragrant, with not one, but two(!) flower stalks! Someone told me that having a fortune plant bloom is tremendous good luck; however, I guess one's interpretation of luck is relative. I've lost my store of 20 years and I had my third stroke, which almost killed me. Well, come to think of it, maybe I'm darn lucky! But two flower stalks! Maybe I should go and buy a lottery ticket...what do you think, fellow myLotters? Have you ever seen a fortune plant bloom? The smell of the flowers is heavenly and only strong enough to smell at night. The smell is very heavy and cloying, heady and if I were to try and describe it, would be a cross between gardenia and orchid. I will ask my son to take a picture and see if he will teach me how to upload it here. As you can probably guess (from the avatar I have been using which is myLot's standard issue for newbies) I am not very tech savvy. Maybe having two flower stalks is double luck? What do you think, my friends?

I wish you put a picture here so that we could all see your blooming fortune plant... are your fortune plants the bamboo type?... i have 4 stalks at home and if we have the same kind of fortune plant... i would surely wait for it to produce flowers... I myself believe that fortune plants bring certain luck to the owner because ever since we had our... good luck has been coming to my family... but i think yours will bring you extra because of the two flowers... here is the link on the topic i started about my fortune plants... there is a picture so you can tell me if we have the same kind... http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1287595.aspx

Hi, aseretdd! The plant in your picture is bamboo, which belongs to the grass family. My fortune plant looks like a corn plant. I will ask my son to take a photo and have him teach me how to upload it. As far as I know, bamboo does not produce flowers. The one you have (I also have a few of them, that were given to me by my friends) is one called the ornamental bamboo, or Chinese bamboo. The stalks are very thin and can grow really tall. There is another type of bamboo which has a thicker body, and is used for building houses and scaffolding for tall structures. The bamboo is considered a lucky plant, because it grows easily and provides a host of uses--from food to furniture to houses.

we have a fortune plant outside the house in the corner and i have a picture of it on facebook. my mother tells me it is a male because its leaves doesn't have a solid green color and it just bloomed a flower or so. it doesn't have a smell either. people say that it brings goodluck, I guess the goodluck will just come and hit us, I hope. We have another one too outside the house but a different type of fortune plant. we call it the seven fingers plant. I have no idea why it's named that for some reason. I guess because it's got more than five fingers/leaves on a stem. check out this site to see the fortune plant I am talking about. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?
